Extrafl oral nectaries (Efns) are nectar secreting glands found in many species of Angiosperms, including Leguminosae. These structures have various forms (elevated, embedded; stalk present or not; different colors) and positions on the plants (on the rachis, on the petiole), and these characteristics are relevant to taxonomy and morphology studies. This work analyses the morphological diversity of Efns in Leguminosae from a priority conservation area of caatinga in Pernambuco state. The 35 Leguminosae species studied were collected in Mirandiba municipality, a semi-arid region of Pernambuco and submitted to the usual techniques of anatomy and morphology analyses. Among these species, Efns with primary (non-substitutive) and secondary (substitutive) origin were characterized. Two different kinds and eleven distinct Efns forms were found. A large variety of placement, color, shape, and size are reported here. An identifi cation key and illustrations are also provided. Our data increased the number of species studied with Efns in the family, and also confi rm the taxonomic and ecological importance of this structure for legumes from the semi-arid region of Brazil.
-(Anatomy and ultrastructure the primary pulvinus of Pterodon pubescens Benth. (Fabaceae -Faboideae)). The anatomy and ultrastructure of Pterodon pubescens primary pulvinus were studied to verify if slow leaf movements are associated with pulvinus cells features. Pulvini samples deriving from leaf with open and closed leaflets were prepared following usual techniques using light and electron microscopy. The pulvinus has a unisseriated epidermis covered by a thick cuticle and many trichomes, cortex with several layers of parenchyma cells (motor cells), a central vascular core surrounded by septate fibers, and a reduced pith. Cortical cells features change with the turgescence degree, showing alteration in the cell size and shape, cell wall thickness, frequency and arrangement of plasmodesmata, vacuole content and number and cytoplasm density. Septate fibers around the phloem were described for the first time in pulvini. The wide occurrence of plasmodesmata, the apoplastic barriers absence and the lignification scarcity (only present in xylem vessels) indicate a continuity, both simplastic and apoplastic, from the epidermis to the vascular tissue of the pulvinus. In Pterodon pubescens, primary pulvinus features are compatible with slow movement pulvini; the features shared to speedy movement pulvini are the presence of vacuoles with phenolic substances in the cortical cells and amiloplasts in the endodermal cells. Movements caused by P. pubescens primary pulvinus are associated with changes in both the apoplastic (wall infoldings) and symplastic (vacuolar reorganization).Key words -anatomy, Fabaceae, Pterodon pubescens, primary pulvinus, ultrastructure RESUMO -(Anatomia e ultra-estrutura do pulvino primário de Pterodon pubescens Benth. (Fabaceae -Faboideae)).
-(Morphology and anatomy of the underground system of Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp. & Endl.) H. Robinson (Asteraceae)). Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp. & Endl.) H. Robinson (Asteraceae), known as yacon is a highaltitude tropical herbaceous species. It was introduced into several countries, including Brazil, because of its nutritional potential, high yield but mainly as a source of inulin. Although its agronomy and biochemistry are relatively well established, little is known about the morphology and nature of its underground system, the main inulin source. The underground system is heterogeneous in nature, consisting of rhizophores, and adventitious thin and tuberous roots. The rhizophores and roots present secretory ducts of lipid in the inner cortical layers, which is derived from the meristematic endoderm.Key words -meristematic endoderm, rhizophore, secretory ducts, Smallanthus sonchifolius, tuberous roots RESUMO -(Morfoanatomia do sistema subterrâneo de Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp. & Endl.) H. Robinson (Asteraceae)).Smallanthus sonchifolius (Poepp. & Endl.)
Abstract:The genus Hymenaea is characterized by a great diversity of secretory structures, but there are no reports of colleters yet. The objectives of this study are to report the occurrence and describe the origin and structure of colleters in Hymenaea stigonocarpa Mart. ex Hayne. Shoot apex samples were collected, fixed, and processed for light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy as per usual methods. Colleters occur predominantly on the stipule's adaxial side. These structures are found at the base on a narrow strip, corresponding to the median vein up to half the length of the stipule. When present on the abaxial side, they are concentrated at the base and restricted to the margins. Colleters develop from the protoderm; they are elongate and club-shaped. Their body has no stratification; their surface cells differ from the inner cells only in position and presence of cuticle. Colleter cells have thin walls, dense cytoplasm, large nuclei, many mitochondria, rough endoplasmic reticulum, and abundant dictyosomes. Histochemical tests with Ruthenium red showed pectic compounds in the cytosol. In H. stigonocarpa, colleter arrangement is compatible with the hypothesis that they protect shoot apex. In this species, protection is reinforced by the sheath formed by the stipule pairs. Rev. Biol. Trop. 54 (3): 943-950. Epub 2006 Sept. 29.
Brosimum gaudichaudii known as "mamacadela" is a common cerrado species with a great importance on medicine folk and in the pharmaceutical industry. The bark of the root and stem is used on the treatment of "vitiligo" being the bergapten and psoralen two furocoumarins responsible for pharmacological activity. This work presents the morphoanatomical and histochemical characterization of the vegetative organs of B. gaudichaudii, with information about its embryo and post-seminal development. Samples were processed by usual techniques of plant anatomy and ultra-structure. The embryo is of the total type and invaginate, the seedling is crypto-hypogeal and the tirodentro's radicular system is composed by primary root that is not always well developed when compared to other roots that probably are derived of the hypocotyl which have greater size. The adult plants present long shoot bud-forming roots and plagiotropics origining with air branch. These roots present a periderm with developed phellem and secondary phloem more developed than xylem, being both easily eminent when manipulated. The stem and the leaf show unisseriate epidermis with a high density of unicellular non-glandular trichomes and glandular trichomes. The laticiferous are branched and non-articulate, occurring at all organs mostly frequently inside of the vessel elem...
