The Atlantic Rainforest originally covered much of the Brazilian coast and is now reduced to approximately only 7% of its original area. Data on abundance distribution and microhabitat characteristics of anuran amphibians living on the forest floor leaf litter in the Atlantic Rainforest are scarce. In this study, we analysed the effect of litter depth and structure on the abundance and species richness of leaf-litter frogs in an area of Atlantic Rainforest at Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro State, south-eastern Brazil. We performed monthly samples (nocturnal and diurnal) from August 1996 to October 1997 using small (2 m ¥ 1 m) plots. We sampled 234 plots, totalling 468 m 2 of forest leaf litter. We estimated leaf-litter depth and the proportion of leaves in the plot and tested their effect on the total abundance of frogs and species richness using multiple regression analysis. We found 185 frogs from eight species: Brachycephalus (=Psyllophryne) didactylus (Izecksohn, 1971) (Brachycephalidae), Dendrophryniscus brevipollicatus Jiménez de la Espada 1871 (Bufonidae), Adenomera marmorata Steindachner 1867, Eleutherodactylus parvus (Girard 1853), Eleutherodactylus guentheri (Steindachner 1864), Eleutherodactylus binotatus (Spix 1824) and Zachaenus parvulus (Girard 1853) (Leptodactylidae), and Chiasmocleis sp. (Microhylidae). Brachycephalus didactylus was the most abundant species, with 91 individuals, whereas Dendrophryniscus brevipollicatus was the rarest, with two individuals. Mean litter depth and the proportion of leaves in the leaf litter were significantly related to frog abundance (R 2 = 0.17; F2,107 = 10.779; P = 0.0001) and species richness (R 2 = 0.11; F2,107 = 6.375; P = 0.002) indicating that microhabitat characteristics may affect local distribution and abundance of frogs in the forest floor.

RESUMO -(Análise florística das pteridófitas do Parque Nacional da Restinga de Jurubatiba, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil). O Parque Nacional da Restinga de Jurubatiba, localizado no norte do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, abrange os municípios de Macaé, Carapebus e Quissamã. Foram registradas para a área de estudo 12 famílias com 21 gêneros e 32 espécies. As famílias encontradas foram Blechnaceae, Cyatheaceae, Davalliaceae, Dennstaedtiaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Lycopodiaceae, Polypodiaceae, Pteridaceae, Salviniaceae, Schizaeaceae e Thelypteridaceae. Dessas, as mais representativas em número de espécies foram Polypodiaceae (5 spp.) e Pteridaceae (5 spp.). Os gêneros com maior número de espécies foram Nephrolepis, Polypodium e Thelypteris. Das 32 espécies registradas, 23 são ervas terrestres, três são ervas epífitas, três ervas aquáticas, duas arborescentes e uma erva hemiepífita. A maior riqueza de espécies e famílias foi registrada para a formação de mata periodicamente inundada e a menor, para a formação arbustiva fechada de pós-praia. Há baixa similaridade entre a flora pteridofítica de diferentes áreas de restingas analisadas e entre as restingas e a mata atlântica. Blechnum serrulatum e Polypodium triseriale são espécies de ocorrência comum em áreas de restingas. Das 32 espécies inventariadas, 17 possuem usos atribuídos (medicinais, ornamentais e comestíveis). The Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park is located on the Northern coast of Rio de Janeiro State (municipalities of Macaé, Carapebus and Quissamã). There are 12 families, 21 genera and 32 species, with the following families present: Blechnaceae, Cyatheaceae, Davalliaceae, Dennstaedtiaceae, Dryopteridaceae, Gleicheniaceae, Lycopodiaceae, Polypodiaceae, Pteridaceae, Salviniaceae, Schizaeaceae and Thelypteridaceae. The most species-rich families are Pteridaceae (5 spp.) and Polypodiaceae (5 spp.). Nephrolepis, Polypodium and Thelypteris were the richest genera. Of the 32 species recorded for the area, 23 are terrestrial herbs, three are epiphytes, three are aquatics, two are arborescent and one is a hemiepiphyte. The periodically flooded forest was the richest in species and families; the beach thicket presented the lowest values. The fern flora of several areas of restinga on the Brazilian coast showed low similarity values; this is also true for restingas and Atlantic forest. Blechnum serrulatum and Polypodium triseriale are commonly found in areas of restinga. Of the 32 species studied, 17 have economic potential (medicinal, ornamental and food).

Estimates of forest leaf litter frog density, mass, richness and diversity given by the widely used 8 m ϫ 8 m large plot method (LPM) were compared with estimates obtained by a newly proposed method (small 2 m ϫ 1 m plots with leaf removal; SPLR). The study site was an undisturbed area of the Atlantic Rainforest of Ilha Grande, an island located in the south of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Twenty-four LPM (totalling 1536 m 2 of forest floor) and 90 SPLR (totalling 180 m 2 of forest floor) were performed. The estimates obtained by the two methods differed markedly, indicating that even using a much smaller sampling area (11.7% of that of LPM), SPLR gave frog density estimates six times higher, and frog mass estimates approximately 2.5 times higher than estimates provided by LPM. The species richness and diversity obtained by the two methods were similar, despite the fact that the total area sampled with SPLR was much smaller. These data suggest that LPM may underestimate the abundance and biomass of leaf litter frogs in a given area.
