Factorial validity and reliability of the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) in the Brazilian physician population

Abstract: The 12-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) is a widely used screening instrument. One- and two-factor structures have been identified in some countries. In Brazil, the best factor structure is still unclear. This study aimed at knowing its factorial validity and reliability, and testing the one-factor and two-factor models. The participants were 7,512 Brazilian physicians. They answered the GHQ-12 and demographic questions. Unrotated (one-factor) and rotated (two-factor) structures of the GHQ-12 were ex… Show more

“…Responses are given on a scale ranging from 1 (more than habitual) to 4 (less than habitual). Brazilian validation studies reported a two-factor solution (depression and self-efficacy) as the most reliable, with Alpha reliability index ranging from .85 to .63 (Damásio, Machado, & Silva, 2011;Gouveia, Barbosa, Andrade, & Carneiro, 2010;Sarriera, Schwarcz, & Câmara, 1996). In this study, the goodness-of-fit of this bifactorial solution (self-efficacy and depression) were: CFI = .98; TLI = .98; RMSEA (90% CI) = .07 (.060 -.082); SRMR = .05.…”
