Impacto da terapia anti-retroviral na magnitude da epidemia do HIV/AIDS no Brasil: diversos cenários

Abstract: We applied the back-calculation method to estimate the magnitude of the HIV epidemic in Brazil, using the EM and EMS algorithms. Under certain assumptions regarding the behavior of infected patients towards combined antiretroviral therapy, we discuss five different scenarios applied to the Brazilian epidemic. Our objective was to illustrate the impact of combined antiretroviral treatment on the incubation period and thus on estimates of the size of the HIV-infected population, based on reported AIDS cases.

“…Moreover, the combination therapy has shown to be effective in improving/restoring the quality of life and increasing survival rates of infected patients. 27 The type of candidiasis most frequently observed was the erythematous type, in accordance with Noce et al, 9 but in disagreement with other authors, such as Souza et al, 11 Mattos, Santos and Ferreira, 28 Ranganathan and Hemelatha, 29 and Ranganathan et al, 30 who reported that pseudomebranous candidiasis was the most common type. These authors also mentioned the presence of angular cheilitis as a frequent fungal infection, a manifestation also observed in this study, albeit with a low incidence (2%).…”

“…To develop vaccination strategy scenarios, information about HIV prevalence and incidence in the adult population and for specific high risk social groups, the utilization of preventive measures (condom use in particular) for these same groups, STI prevalence and estimates of infectivity in treated AIDS patients constitute the nuclear epidemiologic information (Barbosa and Struchiner 2002). With the utilization of mathematical models, these data, together with estimates of vaccine effectiveness, have shown that high-efficacy vaccines manage to impact on HIV prevalence, in spite increased risk behavior, but that tradeoffs increasingly get worse the more imperfect the vaccine (Massad 2001).…”
