PurposeThe article aimed to identify and analyze the income differences across the income distribution between homosexuals and heterosexuals by occupational groups in Brazil.Design/methodology/approachPNAD-C microdata was used in two periods (2013–2015 and 2016 to 2019), highlighting the different economic, social and political contexts in Brazil. Recentered influence function and quantile income decomposition were estimated to verify the difference and income discrimination according to the guideline the worker’s sexuality.FindingsFor some cases homosexual workers earn more and in others, homosexuals earn less than heterosexuals. The differences in remuneration according to sexual orientation were smaller in positions that demand low qualification and competence. The quantile income decomposition between 2013 and 2015 revealed the positive effect of discrimination was the generator of income disparities between homosexuals and heterosexuals, with greater impact for the 10th and 90th quantiles and on groups that require small levels of complexity and education. Between 2016 and 2019, there was the presence of both effects, but the explained effect was the promoter of wage disparities in most occupational groups.Research limitations/implicationsGiven the dataset, it was only possible to work with proxies of homosexual couples.Originality/valueThere has been little research linking the themes of discrimination based on sexual orientation and occupational groups, and so far, it does not exist similar in Latin America. This study found that sexual orientation influences remuneration according to the occupational group that the worker belongs to, affecting income and, consequently, occupational choice. This connection of issues will contribute to new insights into discrimination based on sexual orientation, as well as more effective public policies aimed at reducing discrimination against homosexuals.

ResumoEste trabalho analisa o diferencial de salários no Brasil a partir da orientação sexual com base no Censo 2010. Não foram observados padrões sistemáticos nas estimações tanto em homens como em mulheres, mas diferenças estatisticamente significativas a favor dos casais do mesmo sexo. Destaca-se que os casais gays ganham, em média, 25,11% a mais que os casais heterossexuais, mantendo fixas suas condições de ocupação e ramos de atividade nas estimativas de MQO. No que tange às mulheres, casais de lésbicas ganham, em média, 13,84% a mais nos modelos de correção de seletividade amostral com controle de todas as características observadas.Palavras-chave: Novos Arranjos Familiares; Orientação Sexual; Censo; Diferencial de Salários. AbstractThis paper aims to analyze the wage gap according to sexual orientation by making use of the new methodology of family arrangement identification from the Brazilian Census of 2010. No systematic patterns were found on men and women regressions. However, statistically significant differences in favor of homosexuals were found on both models. It should be mentioned that gay couples earn on average 25.11% more than heterosexual couples, after controlling for occupational and the economic sector. Regarding women, lesbian couples earn on average 13.84% more than their heterosexual counterparts after controlling for the observed characteristics in a sample selection correction model.

El objetivo del artículo es presentar una revisión de la investigación realizada en América Latina sobre el emparejamiento selectivo por edad y por educación en las últimas dos décadas. Se identificó que existe una amplia literatura respecto al emparejamiento selectivo por educación en la región, mientras que aún es necesario explorar más elementos acerca del emparejamiento por edad. La cobertura temática de la investigación producida en torno al emparejamiento selectivo por educación es amplia, particularmente en la última década, y constituye una aportación significativa en la discusión global sobre el tema. Por otra parte, la revisión del análisis del emparejamiento selectivo por edad devela que aún quedan muchas líneas de investigación por explorar en esta temática, particularmente en un contexto como el latinoamericano, marcado por la desigualdad económica y de género, la incertidumbre en el mercado laboral, la heterogeneidad en el estadio de la transición demográfica, entre otras características.
