Studies related to environmental pollution, carbon monoxide levels and smoking need to be deepened, especially in the case of traffic workers. Therefore, the objective was to verify the association between environmental carbon monoxide and carboxyhemoglobin levels among smoking and non-smoking motorcycle taxi drivers. A longitudinal epidemiological study was carried out with 95 motorcycle taxi drivers with measurement of the environmental carbon monoxide, carboxyhemoglobin in the exhaled air in three moments with interval of six months, between June 2014 and March 2015, as well as sociodemographic and occupational characteristics of these workers. The seasons of the year presented different carbon monoxide averages (p <0.05), with higher levels in the spring and lower in the autumn, while carboxyhemoglobin levels among smokers and non-smokers were high in the winter, fair in the spring and low in the autumn. Statistical differences were observed between subgroups: between autumn and spring for nonsmokers (p = 0.024) and between winter and autumn for smokers (p = 0.042). There was a positive correlation between carbon monoxide and carboxyhemoglobin levels for non-smokers (r s = 0.9983; p < 0.01). Environmental pollution represented different levels in the four seasons of the year and significant association with carboxyhemoglobin levels.Thecarboxyhemoglobin levels were higher among smokers, with statistical significance between winter and fall seasons, while non-smokers presented normal levels, whatconfirms the direct influence of tobacco in carboxyhemoglobin levels.

Objective:To assess the prevalences of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in adolescents in the city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 2012 by administering the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire, as well as to compare the observed prevalences with those found in studies performed 10 years earlier and employing the same methodology used here. Methods:This was a cross-sectional study conducted between May and December of 2012 and involving adolescents in the 13- to 14-year age bracket. Participants were randomly selected from among adolescents studying at public schools in Belo Horizonte and completed the ISAAC questionnaire. Proportions were calculated in order to assess the prevalences of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in the sample as a whole, and the chi-square goodness-of-fit test was used in order to compare the prevalences observed in 2012 with those found in 2002. Results:The prevalences of symptoms of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis in 2012 were 19.8%, 35.3%, and 16.3%, respectively, being significantly higher than those found in 2002 (asthma, p = 0.006; allergic rhinitis, p < 0.01; and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, p = 0.002). Conclusions:The prevalences of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis among adolescents in 2012 were found to be high, having increased in comparison with those found 10 years earlier, despite efforts in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment.

Associated with the urban network expansion, these emission sources can affect the air quality, causing damage to the population health, as observed in Freitas et al (2013) and Radicchi (2012), as well as to the environment. Belo Horizonte, capital of Minas Gerais state, is a highly urbanized city located in the third largest metropolitan area of Brazil, being one of the most important cities in the country. There are several potential air pollutant emission sources in the studied area, such as industry and the vehicular fleet (1,669,884 vehicles in 2015). These can affect the air quality, which can have an impact on population health. Despite this critical scenario, few studies have been developed with the objective of evaluating the air quality in this city, especially regarding the identification of pollutant emission sources. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify and quantify atmospheric emissions by stationary sources of significant environmental impact in Belo Horizonte. The quantification of emissions was preferably performed based on chimneys monitoring data. However, in the absence of these data, estimates were made based on AP-42 guidelines. As a result, 75 chimneys were identified, belonging to 28 companies. Pollutant emission rates of 305, 235, 234, 224, 206, 180 and 63 t year-1 were observed for NO X , CO, TSP, PM 10 , PM 2.5 , SO 2 and VOC, respectively. The results obtained can contribute to the diagnosis, modeling and management of air quality in Belo Horizonte.
