Abstract:In this paper we discuss ways to obtain information about the quality of ground water and their availability. We classify the different approaches in two categories: geophysical methods, e.g., electroresistivity sounding, seismic survey, gravimetry, MT (magnetotelluric) method, and geochemical methods. The former ones are able to provide information on the geological structure, meaning depth, range, amount of water and possible connections among different exploration areas or regions at risk due to contamination. On the other hand, the last ones provide information about the quality of water and the possible of use for agriculture, industry or human consumption. As a case study we aim at the Guarani Aquifer, more specifically at its recharge zone on the southern rim.

Hydrogeophysical study of parts of Charnockite terrain of Akure, southwestern Nigeria was carried out using the electrical resistivity method. The study involved one hundred and fifty two (152) Schlumberger geoelectric soundings (with seven (7) of them parametric)) alongside static water level measurements in 102 hand-dug wells. The Precambrian Crystalline Basement Complex rocks underlying the area consist largely of Charnockite with some granite and migmatite-gneiss bodies. The interpreted results enabled the determination of overburden thickness, longitudinal unit conductance (S) and coefficient of anisotropy (λ). The static water level measurements were used to determine the vadose zone thickness and groundwater flow direction. The overburden thickness in the study area ranges between 2.0 and 66.9 m; bedrock resistivity range between 748 and ∞ Ω-m while the vadose zone thickness ranges between 0.5 and 11.3 m. The groundwater potential of the area was classified based on the overburden thickness (h) and resistivity values (ρ). Thus, areas characterized by 100 ≤ ρ ≤ 800 Ω-m with h ≥ 45 m are classified as high, while areas presenting 15 ≤ h ≤ 45 m are classified as medium and areas of h ≤ 15 m are classified as low. A modified geologic classification of the study area using λ values was undertaken with λ ≤ 1.2 areas classified as Charnockite while areas with λ > 1.2 classified as granite and migmatite-gneiss complex. A correlation of the field geological map with the λ map presents a good correlation especially within areas underlain by Charnockite.

Abstract:The geophysical methods may be employed in aquifer system studies, as determination of groundwater level, soil/rock contact, beyond estimative of the aquifer thickness horizon. The geoeletric methods are particularly relevant in evaluations of the oilfields systems, due to directs relations between porosity and electrical resistivity, which allow inferences about oil and gas production. The indirect estimative of the productions in free aquifers system is something complex before of the diverse variables responsible for factors or physical phenomena, as clays minerals, which conditioned the physical parameters by electric geophysical methods. This paper present analyzed correlation among electrical resistivity, chargeability and direct measure flow in shallow wells, for determination of statistical relationships between parameters and evaluation of the geological constraints evolved. The study count with the 23 shallow wells located in free aquifer, constituted by alteration materials of the granites localized in Caçapava do Sul (RS). The geophysical data are acquired by vertical electric sounding in Schlumberger array. The correlations between electrical resistivity and flow, chargeability and flow, thickness of the soil/saprolite and flow indicated relationships between physical and hydrogeologic parameters, with variations conditioned by factors as porosity, permeability, besides intrinsic geological heterogeneities such soil variable thickness and rock fragments with several alteration degrees. Caçapava do Sul.Resumo: Os métodos geofísicos podem ser empregados em estudos de sistemas aquíferos, como determinação da profundidade do nível aquífero, contato solo/rocha, além da estimativa de espessura de horizontes aquífe-ros. Os métodos geoelétricos são particularmente relevantes na avaliação de campos petrolíferos, devido a relações diretas entre porosidade e resistividade elétrica, que permitem inferências acerca da produção de óleo e gás. A estimativa indireta de produção em sistemas aquíferos rasos é algo complexo diante de diversas variá-veis responsáveis por fatores ou fenômenos físicos, como presença de argilominerais, que condicionam os parâmetros físicos medidos por métodos geofísicos elétricos. Este trabalho analisa correlações e ntre resistividade, cargabilidade e medidas diretas de vazão em poços rasos, para determinação de relações estatísticas entre parâmetros e avaliação dos condicionantes geológicos envolvidos. O estudo contou com 23 poços rasos locados num aquífero livre constituído por manto de alteração de granitos localizados no município de Caçapava do Sul (RS). Os dados geofísicos foram adquiridos por meio da técnica de sondagem elétrica vertical em arranjo Schlumberger.
