Show more

“…The daily variation in rectal temperature can be to ranges 0.3 to 1.9°C (Piccione and Refinetti 2003). In different environmental conditions, the rectal temperature is maintained within the proper range for goats (Rocha et al 2009, Salles et al 2009, Phulia et al 2010, Aiura, Aiura and Silva 2010, Leite et al 2012, Lucena et al 2013, Ribeiro 2013). …”

“…That is, if the animal has a high respiratory rate and excellent efficiency of heat loss to maintain homeothermy, heat stress may not occur (Berbigier and Cabello 1990). Several studies were developed on this issue as those reported by Rocha et al (2009), Leite et al (2012), Lucena et al (2013), Ribeiro (2013).…”

“…Rocha et al (2009), working on the climatic adaptability of Azul goats in Mid-North Brazil, concluded that these animals are well adapted to the tropical climate, managing to keep the rectal temperature and respiratory rate low, with good heatdissipation capacity in this region. Table 6 -Mean frequencies of behavioral categories water consumption and interaction with the drinker of the genetic groups and periods analyzed…”

“…However, farming these animals exclusively on pasture compromises the supply and quality of the final product due to the presence of long drought periods in this region and reduced forage available in the pastures for feeding animals (Rocha et al, 2009). Confinement or semi-confinement of native goats have been recommended and performed aiming to meet the requirements for maintenance and production of animals besides reducing the mortality of young animals due to nutritional deficiencies and parasitic infestations.…”

“…Among the goats reared in the semiarid north eastern Brazil, Azul, Graúna and Moxotó are the genetic groups highlighted for being highly adapted to the tropical climate, whereas the majority are reared under extensive or semi-intensive systems (Rocha et al, 2009) showing, however, little information about their behaviour once confined. The confinement of these animals has been recommended for presenting benefits and advantages such as increased weight gain, lower mortality, reduced pasture stocking during fodder scarcity, sale date arrangement, and higher gain of final profits and acceleration of capital turnover (Almeida et al, 2004).…”
