Image monitoring on the behavior study of three genetic groups of confined goats

Abstract: -The objective of this study was to analyze the behavior of three genetic groups of confined goats by image monitoring using nine unneutered goats of the Azul, Graúna and Moxotó genotypes. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 3 × 3 factorial arrangement (genetic groups × periods -morning, afternoon and night), with three replications. Animals were monitored by video cameras placed at the ceiling of each stall for 10 days. There were interaction factors in the frequency of behavioral categori… Show more

“…Animals' physiological, physical, and psychological condition changes if their welfare is affected due to environmental changes, injury, illness, tension, or other reason, consequently resulting in behavioral changes. Ribeiro et al, (2006) and Silva et al, (2014) stated that behavioral analyses build knowledge about normal animal behaviors that can be transferred to producers, which in turn may use it to identify abnormal behaviors and seek for palliative measures to solve the problem. The mainly purpose of providing environmental enrichment is to allow animals to express their natural behavior, propitiating their welfare as far as possible (Ribeiro et al, 2006).…”

“…An increase in plasma CK concentration is observed if mus-cle damage occurs or high physical activity exists. The increase in plasma LDH level is mainly caused by tissue damage (Bórnez et al, 2009;De la Fuente et al, 2010;Kannan et al, 2003;Tadich et al, 2009). In the current study, the fact that both the fattening week and breed had no effect on plasma CK and LDH suggests that the animals were not exposed to strenuous muscle activity during the fattening period.…”

“…To capture images, we used a smartphone (Moto X model; Motorola Mobility LLC, Chicago, Illinois, USA), with a 13 megapixels camera, supported on the second step, 0.15 m away from the seed line, so that the lens remained on the seed lines. The images were captured in an environment with only one light source, close to the platform, in order to avoid shadows in the images, as recommended by Silva et al (2014b). The central seed and the ones at the two ends were measured with a digital caliper (Mitutoyo; Sakado, Saitama, Japan) with a 0.01 mm resolution for image validation.…”
