The aim of this study was to assess the cardiopulmonary, analgesic, adverse effects, serum concentration of cortisol and plasma levels of levobupivacaine and morphine in bitches undergoing propofol anesthesia and epidural analgesia with levobupivacaine alone or combined with morphine. This was a randomized 'blinded' prospective clinical study using 32 adult bitches weighing 9.8±4.1kg that were admitted for elective ovariohysterectomy. Twenty minutes after administration of acepromazine and midazolam, anesthesia was induced with propofol (4mg kg -1 ) and maintained by a continuous rate infusion (CRI). Each animal was randomly assigned to one of four epidural groups: GL = levobupivacaine alone (0.33mg kg -1 ); GLM0.1 = levobupivacaine and morphine (0.1mg kg -1 ); GLM0.15 = levobupivacaine and morphine (0.15mg kg -1 ); and GLM0.2 = levobupivacaine and morphine (0.2mg kg -1 ). Variables obtained during anesthesia were heart rate, respiratory rate, systolic, mean and diastolic arterial blood pressures, oxyhemoglobin saturation, inspired oxygen fraction, end-tidal carbon dioxide tension, blood gases, serum cortisol, and plasma levels of levobupivacaine and morphine. The onset and duration times of the blockade were recorded. Arterial pressures were significantly increased in all groups at the times of ovarian pedicle clamping. There was a decrease in pH, together with an increase in both PaO 2 and PaCO 2 over time. Serum cortisol levels were increased in TESu compared to TB, T30 and TR. Limb spasticity, muscle tremors, opisthotonos and diarrhea were observed in some animals during propofol infusion and ceased with the end of CRI. Reactions happened at different moments and lasted for different periods of time in each individual. Epidural with levobupivacaine alone or combined with morphine allowed for ovariohysterectomy to be performed under low propofol infusion rates, with minimal changes in cardiovascular variables and in serum cortisol levels. Adverse effects were observed in very few animals in each group. RESUMO.-Com este estudo objetivou-se descrever a topografia do cone medular do macaco-prego (Sapajus libidinosus) a fim de fornecer suporte para que a realização de procedimentos anestésicos, bem como exames de mielografia e coleta de líquor, dentre outros procedimentos que utilizam a via epidural. Para tanto foram dissecados oito animais, sendo seis machos e duas fêmeas, de diferentes faixas etárias. Rebateu-se a pele para retirada da musculatura da região dorsal, exposição de toda a coluna vertebral e identificação das vértebras lombares e sacrais. Para estabelecer o final da medula espinhal e medir o comprimento This study aimed to describe the topography of the conus of capuchin monkey (Sapajus libidinosus) to provide support for anesthetic procedures, as well as examinations of myelography and CSF collection, among other procedures using the epidural route. Eight animals were dissected, six males and two females, of different ages. The skin was countered for removal of the dorsal musculature for exposure of the entire spine and identification of the lumbar and sacral vertebrae. To establish the end of the spinal cord and to measure the length of the conus medullaris, we opened the lumbosacral spinal canal through side section of the vertebral arches. The dura mater was sectioned to visualize the conus and to observe the topographical relation with the vertebrae. All animals showed five lumbar vertebrae and three sacral vertebrae. The vertebrae were in general very closed with the spinous processes well developed and directed cranially. The conus of capuchin monkeys was located between the L2 and L5 vertebrae, with the base mostly in the L3 vertebra, and the peak in L4. The body length (interarcual space occiptoatlântico until sacrocaudal interarcual space) ranged from 22.9 to 31.8cm, with a mean of 27.44±3.1cm while the medullary cone length ranged from 1.70 to 3.51cm, with a mean of 2.47±0.57cm. There was no correlation between body size and length of the medullary cone (r=0.212). It is concluded that despite the variations in length and positioning of the medullary cone, its height does not exceed the lumbosacral joint, making safe access to the epidural space in this way.

Effects of sildenafil on the viability of random skin flaps

Purpose:To assess the viability of McFarlane skin flaps in rats with administration of sildenafil. Methods: Twenty Wistar rats were distributed into two groups: Control (dorsal skin flap, subdermal application of saline solution at 0.9%) and Study (dorsal skin flap, subdermal application of sildenafil). Seven days after the surgery, flaps were photographed and graphically rendered. Then, they were analyzed with AutoCAD software. Three biopsies (proximal, medial and distal) of each flap were collected for histological analysis. Results: Macroscopic analysis showed that animals of the study group had greater necrotic areas (p=0.003) in the dorsal skin flaps. Additionally, histological analysis of the distal third of these flaps showed a tendency to less granulated tissue formation in animals treated with sildenafil. Conclusion: Sildenafil subdermally was associated with lower viability of the random skin flap in rats. Key words: Wound Healing. Surgical Flaps. Cyclic GMP. Nitric Oxide. Rats. RESUMOObjetivo: Avaliar a viabilidade de retalhos cutâneos de ratos à McFarlane após a administração de sildenafil. Métodos: Vinte ratos Wistar foram distribuídos em dois grupos: Controle (confecção do retalho cutâneo dorsal, aplicação subdérmica de solução salina a 0,9%) e Estudo (confecção do retalho cutâneo dorsal, aplicação subdérmica de sildenafil). Sete dias após a operação, os retalhos foram fotografados e representados graficamente, para serem analisados com o programa AutoCad. Três biópsias (cranial, média e caudal) foram coletadas de cada retalho, para análise histológica. Resultados: A análise macroscópica evidenciou que os animais do grupo Estudo apresentaram maiores áreas de necrose (p=0,003) nos retalhos cutâneos dorsais. Além disso, a análise histológica dos terços distais dos retalhos mostrou uma tendência à formação de menos tecido de granulação nos animais que receberam o sildenafil. Conclusão: O sildenafil subdérmico esteve associado com uma pior viabilidade tecidual dos retalhos cutâneos dorsais de ratos. Descritores: Cicatrização de Feridas. Retalhos Cirúrgicos. GMP Cíclico.
