Effect of selenium-vitamin E injection in selenium-deficient dairy goats and kids on the Mexican plateau

Abstract: Three experiments were carried out to determine the optimum selenium-vitamin E injection level to maintain acceptable blood selenium (Se) status of does and kids, as well as to determine the relation of that status to mortality rates in kids. In experiment 1, 238 goats were assigned to one of three groups during the mating period: A1-control, A2-0.06mgSe+0.8IU vitE/kgBW and A3-0.125mgSe+1.7IU vitE/kgBW. No differences (P>.05) for fertility and prolificacy were observed among the groups. Blood Se concentration … Show more

“…The GSH-Px increases in blood circulation as a result of the greater availability of blood selenium, as it is dependent on this element (Rooke et al 2004;Halliwell and Gutteridge 2007). The higher GSH-Px values at T0 in the group supplemented with selenium only is related to its application thirty days prior to the experimental period, as selenium reaches its peak action at approximately 60 days (Ramirez-Bribiesca et al 2005).…”

“…That is because, according to the literature, the selenium dose reaches peak blood within 60 days after administration (Ramirez-Bribiesca et al, 2005). Copper was administered at T0 and 30 days later.…”
