Lettuce is the most consumed hardwood crop in the world. Originating in temperate climates, early flowering of lettuce is induced in regions and/or periods of high temperatures. The objective of this work was to evaluate the tolerance to bolting of cultivars of crisp lettuce, during different growing seasons, in the western region of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design, in a 6 x 2 factorial scheme comprising six cultivars (Milena, Vanda, Vera, Valentina, Pira Verde, and Grand Rapids) and two distinct growing environments (protected and field), during two growing seasons in the summer period. The following were evaluated: days from transplant to flowering, stem length, diameter, total fresh and commercial mass, number of leaves, and commercial and total productivity. Data were submitted to analysis of variance and comparison of means by the Tukey test (p <0.05). The Pira Verde, Milena, Valentina and Vanda cultivars were found to be tolerant to early tillage under the tested conditions. In the protected environment, the best growing season for crisp lettuce was the first summer period evaluated, involving seedling transplant in February and harvest in April. In contrast, the best growing season in the field environment was the second summer period, with seedling transplant in March and harvest in May.

Agronomic performance of crisphead lettuce genotypes at Sub-Middle São Francisco ValleyAmong the types of lettuce currently cultivated, crisphead lettuce has exceeded, which aims to serve mainly the networks of fast food. In order to evaluate the productive behavior of lettuce cultivars in Sub-Middle of São Francisco Valley, Pernambuco State, Brazil, two experiments were carried out, in 2013 and 2014. Randomized blocks with twelve genotypes in 2013 and twenty-two genotypes in 2014, with three replications, were evaluated. Total and commercial production per plant; total and commercial productivity; circumference of the commercial "head" and stem length in each year of cultivation were obtained. On both experiments the cultivars were evaluated through joint analysis. For the 2013 crop, total production and productivity showed significant differences between treatments, wherein Havassu (940 g/plant and 78.3 t/ha), Perovana (922 g/plant and 76.8 t/ha), Laurel (903 g/plant and 75.2 t/ha) and Balsamo (875 g/ plant and 72.8 t/ha) were the genotypes that exceeded. In 2014, fresh mass and total productivity ranged between 526 and 816 g/plant and 43.8 and 67.9 t/ha, Laurel (816 g/plant and 67.9 t/ha) and Silvana (809 g/plant and 67.4 t/ha) presenting the best results, with no difference among them. For joint analysis, every evaluated characteristic was significantly affected by the interaction between the factors, year and cultivars. We concluded that the cultivation of crisphead lettuce is viable in the region. The cultivars Ironwood, Havassu, Laurel, Flora, Perovana, Raider Plus, Balsamo and Silvana are the most indicated.

These results are superior to those found in the present study with the cultivars Thaís, Vanda and Verônica.…”

A B S T R A C TThe objective of this study was to evaluate the growth of crisp lettuce in hydroponic cultivation, following the nutrient film technique (NFT), using optimized mineral and organomineral nutrient solutions. The experiment was set in 8 x 3 factorial scheme, with treatments distributed in randomized blocks and split plots, with three replicates. The plots corresponded to eight nutrient solutions, of which four were mineral solutions with chemical composition suggested by Bernardes, Furlani, Castellane & Araújo and Ueda, and four were organomineral solutions, suggested by this research with chemical composition similar to those of the previously mentioned mineral solutions. The subplots corresponded to three varieties of crisp lettuce: Thaís, Vanda and Verônica. At 25 days after transplanting, the following parameters were evaluated: stem and crown diameter, root length, leaf area and number of leaves. For stem and crown diameters and number of leaves, the mineral solutions promoted the highest means. The mineral solution of Furlani and the organomineral solutions, except the modified solution of Castellane & Araújo, promoted the greatest root lengths. The smallest leaf area was obtained in the organomineral solution of Ueda. The cultivar Verônica had the highest root length and stem diameter.Crescimento da alface hidropônica cultivada com soluções nutritivas minerais e organominerais otimizadas R E S U M O Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, avaliar o crescimento da alface crespa em cultivo hidropônico, seguindo a técnica do fluxo laminar de nutrientes (NFT), utilizando soluções nutritivas minerais e organominerais otimizadas. Instalou-se um experimento em blocos casualizados com o uso de parcelas subdivididas, com três repetições. As parcelas corresponderam a oito soluções nutritivas, sendo quatro minerais com composição química sugeridas por Bernardes, Furlani, Castellane & Araújo e Ueda e quatro organominerais, sugeridas nesta pesquisa com composição química semelhante às soluções minerais, anteriormente citadas. As subparcelas corresponderam a três cultivares da alface crespa (Thaís, Vanda e Verônica). Aos 25 dias após o transplantio das mudas avaliaram-se as variáveis diâmetro do caule e da coroa, comprimento da raiz, área foliar e número de folhas. Para os diâmetros da coroa e do caule e número de folhas, as soluções minerais promoveram as maiores médias. A solução mineral de Furlani e as soluções organominerais, exceto a de Castellane & Araújo modificada, promoveram os maiores comprimentos de raízes; a menor área foliar foi obtida pela solução organomineral de Ueda. A cultivar Verônica apresentou os maiores comprimento de raiz e diâmetro caulinar.
