ABSTRACT. The use of best linear unbiased prediction/restricted maximum likelihood (BLUP/REML) in perennial crops and animal breeding enhances selection gain. However, its advantage with respect to annual crops is not clear. We compared the BLUP and best linear unbiased estimator selection efficiency in the breeding of various potato generations. This was done by simulating various selection intensities on clonal families (full sibs), and clones. The characters evaluated were tuber yield and tuber specific gravity. Two criteria were adopted for comparison: a) incidence of families or clones and b) selection gain. For tuber yield, BLUP/REML method was slightly more efficient for selecting families in the first clonal generation, if it were above 50%. Below this value, both methods were equivalent. However, they both presented equal behavior for family selection of tuber specific gravity. For clonal selection, BLUP/REML showed robust superiority from 10 to 90% selection intensities in both characters. Therefore, the adequate use of BLUP/REML in potato breeding can enhance the selection gain on the yield and specific gravity of tubers.

This work evaluated the performance of potato clones for some agronomic and processing traits, in subtropical and high-altitude tropical regions, under conventional and organic production systems. Experiments were conducted in spring of 2017 and 2018 in Canoinhas-SC (subtropical), under the conventional system, and in winter of 2018 and 2019 in Brasília-DF (tropical), Brazil, under conventional and organic systems. Eleven advanced clones and cultivars Agata (fresh), Atlantic (chipping) and Asterix (French fry) were evaluated. RCBD with tree replications was used, and tuber yield and processing traits, plant vigor and cycle were evaluated. It was not possible to select high yielding and good processing quality clones with short cycle and less vigorous plants. It because higher yield and larger tuber size were attained by longer cycle genotypes, which had higher specific gravity, but darker frying color. The most outstanding clones differed with region and production system. For chipping, in the subtropical region, no clone had adequate quality, but in tropical F177-11-20 presented similar processing traits and higher or similar yield to 'Atlantic' in both systems, and also ORG7785 in organic. Comparing with ‘Asterix’, for French fry, in the subtropical region, superior or similar to the standard this cultivarwere F129-10-06 and F163-11-01; while in the tropical region and conventional system, were the clones ORG7785, F129-10-06, F163-11-01, F177-11-20, ORG6464, ORG 6377, F05-11-03, Odone 80-02 and F174-11-01; and in organicsystem, the best cloneswere F54-11-03, ORG7785, F129-10-06, F163-11-01, F177-11-20 and ORG6464.

Development of Brazilian potato cultivars adapted to different growing conditions, production systems and regions of the country is very important to increase the competitiveness of the national potato chain. In this sense, the objective of this work was to verify the performance of advanced potato clones for tuber yield traits, vine maturity and frying quality. An experiment was carried out in Pelotas-RS in spring, 2014. A set of nine advanced potato clones and two control cultivars were evaluated using a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Plots consisted of single rows of 20 plants spaced at 0.80 m between rows and 0.30 m between plants. The data of each trait were submitted to the deviance analysis, estimated the genetic values and selected the best genotypes using selection indices of the sum of ranks and the lowest distance from the ideotype. Clones F131-08-26 and F183-08-01, and the check ‘Asterix’ were distinguished for yield of marketable tubers. F183-08-01 and the control stood out for specific gravity and average tuber weight. Clone F161-07-02 ranked among the best for specific gravity, frying color and vine maturity. F97-07-04 and F183-08-01 and the check ‘Asterix’ were the best according to the selection indices, however, would result in losses in the frying color and vine maturity traits.
