Expression of tuber traits as a function of pot size used to grow potato seedlingsIn potato breeding, the exclusion of inferior genotypes by selection in early generations provides more versatility and cost reduction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of pot size on the expression of tuber traits in potato families grown as seedling generation. Ten potato families were planted in two pot sizes, large (1 L) and small (250 ml), in the greenhouse. The following tuber traits were evaluated: color, roughness, depth of eye, eyebrow, shape, uniformity of shape, pointing, curvature, flattening, tuber general appearance, total mass per plant, average tuber weight and number of tubers. The larger pot provided greater expression of genetic variation for the depth of eye, eyebrow, curvature, flattening, and tuber general appearance of all yield components. Higher means for tuber number, tuber size and tuber mass were obtained in larger pots, while higher genetic coefficient of variation for tuber shape, uniformity of shape and tuber pointing were observed in the small pots.Key words: Solanum tuberosum L., early selection, genetic improvement. The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of potato clonal families, and to estimate genetic variance, heritability and the expected response to selection of tuber yield and appearance traits in early generations. Twelve potato families were obtained from crosses between two groups of randomly-selected genotypes, including Eliza, C1730-7-94, and C1742-8-95 in group 1; and Shepody, Asterix, Caesar, and White Lady in group 2. The crosses were made in factorial design (3 genotypes x 4 genotypes), and each family consisted of 75 genotypes. Experiments were conducted in the fall of 2010, with a seedling generation under greenhouse conditions, and in the fall of 2011, with a clonal generation under field condition. High heritability estimates suggest that mild to moderate selection can be applied in the seedling generation to eye depth, eyebrow prominence, tuber curvature, flattening and shape uniformity. The C1742-8-95/White Lady stood out as a superior cross, as did all other crosses with White Lady, regarding tuber appearance and yield traits. Key words: Solanum tuberosum L. Seedling generation. Palavras-chave: Solanum tuberosum L. Relationships among potato tuber traits in early generations of selectionThe objective of this study was to evaluate the relationships among tuber traits in potato progenies in the seedling generation and in the first clonal generation. The experiments were carried out at Embrapa Clima Temperado, in Pelotas, RS. Twelve potato progenies were grown as seedling generation in a greenhouse in the crop year 2010/2011 and the first field generation was grown in the crop year 2011/2012. The two trials were arranged in a randomized complete block design with tree replications of 25 seedlings per family. After harvest, tubers of each plant were evaluated for 14 phenotypic traits. Individual and joint analyses of variance were performed for the generations As well as correlation analysis between generations and path analysis for each generation. The correlations between tuber appearance and skin roughness; tuber curvature and pointing; weight and number of tubers; and eyebrow prominence and eye depth are strongly and positively correlated in the first two generations of selection. The correlation between the first two generations for eye depth, eyebrow prominence, tuber weight, tuber number, tuber curvature and tuber pointing indicates that selection for these traits can be applied in the seedling generation. Roughness and tuber curvature are the characteristics that most influence the overall appearance, thus the selection of these characters can be used to improve the tuber overall appearance.
