Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of internet gaming disorder (IGD) and associated risk factors in a sample of secondary and postsecondary students from a public federal institution of higher education (Instituto Federal de Educac¸ã o, Ciê ncia e Tecnologia) in Southern Brazil. Methods: The study included a sociodemographic questionnaire, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-BR), the Mini-Social Phobia Inventory (Mini-SPIN), and the Game Addiction Scale (GAS). Finally, IGD was measured with the Brazilian version of the Internet Gaming Disorder Scale-Short-Form (IGDS9-SF), which has been psychometrically validated in this population. Results: Overall, 38.2% (n=212) of the sample exhibited IGD symptoms, with 18.2% (n=101) being classed as at-risk gamers. Regression analysis found IGD to be associated with male gender, severe depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality, increased time spent gaming, and total free time spent gaming (p o 0.001). Conclusions: The prevalence of IGD in this sample was relatively high, and associated risk factors found were similar to those previously reported in the literature. Further studies investigating the epidemiology of IGD in Brazilian samples are warranted to better understand treatment needs and inform preventive measures in this population.

RESUMOO presente artigo tem por objetivo descrever o processo de adaptação e validação da Escala Multidimensional de Expressão Socialparte Motora (EMES-M) para o contexto brasileiro. A expressão social motora consiste nas habilidades sociais, que são preditores de qualidade de vida e da qualidade das relações interpessoais. A amostra foi composta de 925 indivíduos de ambos os sexos, entre 18 e 35 anos. Foram realizadas análises fatoriais confirmatórias com um modelo de oito fatores teoricamente baseados. A escala apresentou propriedades psicométricas adequadas, com CFI 0,910, TLI de 0,904, RMSEA de 0,049 e consistência interna da escala total de 0,945. Também apresentou validade convergente, medida a partir de correlações com escalas que avaliam assertividade e ansiedade social. A partir dos resultados, conclui-se que a escala pode ser utilizada em contextos de pesquisa para avaliar as habilidades sociais. ABSTRACT -Psychometric Properties of the Multidimensional Social Expression Scale -Motor (EMES-M) in a Brazilian SampleThe present article aims to describe the process of adaptation and validation of the Multidimensional Social Expression Scale -Motor Part (EMES-M) for the Brazilian context. Motor social expression consists of social skills, which are predictors of quality of life and interpersonal relationship quality. The sample consisted of 925 individuals of both sexes, between 18 and 35 years old. Confirmatory factor analyses were performed with a theoretically based eight-factor model. The scale had adequate psychometric properties, with CFI 0.910, TLI of 0.904, RMSEA of 0.049 and internal consistency of the total scale of 0.945. It also presented convergent validity, measured from correlations with scales that evaluate assertiveness and social anxiety. Evidence on Problematic Online Gaming and Social Anxiety over the Past Ten Years: a Systematic Literature Review

Purpose of Review The present study aimed to review the literature concerning the relationship between problematic online gaming (POG) and social anxiety, taking into account the variables implicated in this relationship. This review included studies published between 2010 and 2020 that were indexed in major databases with the following keywords: Internet gaming, disorder, addiction, problematic, social phobia, and social anxiety. Recent Findings In recent years, scientific interest in POG has grown dramatically. Within this prolific research field, difficulties associated with social anxiety have been increasingly explored in relation to POG. Indeed, evidence showed that individuals who experience social anxiety are more exposed to the risk of developing an excessive or addictive gaming behavior. Summary A total of 30 studies satisfied the initial inclusion criteria and were included in the present literature review. Several reviewed studies found a strong association between social anxiety and online gaming disorder. Furthermore, the relationships among social anxiety, POG, age, and psychosocial and comorbid factors were largely explored. Overall, the present review showed that socially anxious individuals might perceive online video games as safer social environments than face-to-face interactions, predisposing individuals to the POG. However, in a mutually reinforcing relationship, individuals with higher POG seem to show higher social anxiety. Therefore, despite online gaming might represent an activity able to alleviate psychopathological symptoms and/or negative emotional states, people might use online gaming to counterbalance distress or negative situations in everyday life, carrying out a maladaptive coping strategy.
