The process of developing technological research is being carried out beyond organizational boundaries, especially organizations that make intensive use of knowledge, such as Biotechnology. Considerable progress has been made in recent years in reducing costs and increasing the ease of gene sequencing and, ultimately, in activating or editing genes. In this context, discussions have been gaining prominence around Industry 4.0, in which new business models and intelligent processes for Biotechnology are evidenced. However, the challenges regarding the training and education of professionals are discussed, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary education, unlike the more traditional nature of education in the areas of biology and sciences. These challenges can be partially transposed by strengthening the partnerships of universities and research centers with companies, in order to materialize in common projects, the demands of industries and the possibilities of transforming research projects into final products available to society. This paper presents a study on the impact of Industry 4.0 technologies on Biotechnology, and also presents the prospect of future professions with the influence of Industry 4.0. The results show that technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics and 3D printing are promising in the development and advancement of Biotechnology. New automated laboratories are under development. Also, regulatory issues require a great deal of study, and business models will need to be more efficient to generate the results needed for the development of new drugs, food, and research of new products related to health.

Statistical analyses are an essential part of scientific research. Several choices, including the setup of the experiment, influence the selection of statistical procedures. Thus, successful planning implies accurate analysis. We used a 95% confidence interval and a 7% error margin to sample and characterize the statistical techniques used in studies on micropropagation and to discuss the effects of misusing these techniques. We quantified the following: sample size, number of replications, design, scheme (factorial or not factorial) and number of treatments, whether data transformation was used, transformation type and criteria for selection; variable type (quantitative or qualitative); statistical test and regression types. Although statistics were consistently used in these micropropagation experiments, there were several limitations such as small plot sizes, low replication numbers, employing data transformation while neglecting to inform the criteria used or even using the wrong criteria. Although statistical approaches were applied homogeneously, neglecting to use blocking can lead to errors. Blocking is recommended to increase sample size. For example, the times of an experiment or the number of people needed to set up an experiment can be used as blocks. Micropropagation studies typically employ factorial experiments to identify plant regulator types and application rates. Thus, these experiments have numerous treatments. The Tukey test is used for qualitative data while regression models (linear and quadratic) are more frequently used for quantitative data.

Social and economical development is closely associated with technological innovation and a well-developed biotechnological industry. In the last few years, Brazil's scientific production has been steadily increasing; however, the number of patents is lagging behind, with technological and translational research requiring governmental incentive and reinforcement. The Cell and Molecular Therapy Center (NUCEL) was created to develop activities in the translational research field, addressing concrete problems found in biomedical and veterinary areas and actively searching for solutions by employing a genetic engineering approach to generate cell lines over-expressing recombinant proteins to be transferred to local biotech companies, aiming at furthering the development of a national competence for local production of biopharmaceuticals of widespread use and of life-saving importance. To this end, mammalian cell engineering technologies were used to generate cell lines over-expressing several different recombinant proteins of biomedical and biotechnological interest, namely, recombinant human Amylin/IAPP for diabetes treatment, human FVIII and FIX clotting factors for hemophilia, human and bovine FSH for fertility and reproduction, and human bone repair proteins (BMPs). Expression of some of these proteins is also being sought with the baculovirus/insect cell system (BEVS) which, in many cases, is able to deliver high-yield production of recombinant proteins with biological activity comparable to that of mammalian systems, but in a much more cost-effective manner. Transfer of some of these recombinant products to local Biotech companies has been pursued by taking advantage of the São Paulo State Foundation (FAPESP) and Federal Government (FINEP, CNPq) incentives for joint Research Development and Innovation partnership projects.
