In this study aspects of the ecophysiology and morphology of the seed and seedling of Raulinoa echinata was analyzed aiming to contribute with taxonomic studies, ecology and the preservation of this species. Fruit and seeds were collected from a population located in Apiúna (SC). The seedlings obtained from germination were grown in trays filled with substratum composed of dystroferric red nitosoil and sand (1:1) and were irrigated daily. After 15 days of growth, the morphology of the seedlings was observed. The seeds presented ovoid format, axial embryo and fleshy cotyledons, and were exarillate and exalbuminous like are the seeds of other Rutaceae species. Nevertheless, the seeds presented a conspicuous micropyle, an uncommon feature for Rutaceae. The seedlings did not expose the cotyledons, keeping them in the interior of the integument and below the ground, a characteristic of cryptohypogeal germination. Some of these features are important to elucidate the relationship between the species and the riparian forest and the other taxons of the Rutaceae.

The Spathelia-Ptaeroxylon clade is well placed in Rutaceae and it is reasonable to unite the genera into one subfamily (Spathelioideae). We propose a new tribal classification of Spathelioideae. A narrow circumscription of Spathelia is established to make the genus monophyletic, and Sohnreyia is resurrected to accommodate the South American species of Spathelia. The most recent common ancestor of Spathelioideae probably had leaves with secretory cavities and oil cells, haplostemonous flowers with appendaged staminal filaments, and a tracheidal tegmen.

Embryology ofHarrisonia(Cneoroideae, Rutaceae): a comparison with related genera and families

Harrisonia, a genus of three or more species distributed from tropical Africa and Southeast Asia to northern Australia, has long been considered a member of Simaroubaceae. Recent molecular analyses, however, have shown that the genus is assigned to subfamily Cneoroideae of Rutaceae, in which Cneoroideae (eight genera) are sister to the remainder of the family (‘core Rutaceae’). Here, we report embryological features of Harrisonia based on published and newly obtained data and provide morphological corroboration for the molecular affinities of the genus and Cneoroideae. We compared its embryological features with those of seven other genera of Cneoroideae and with those of the core Rutaceae and related families (Meliaceae, Simaroubaceae and Sapindaceae). Comparisons showed that Harrisonia fits within Cneoroideae through possessing campylotropous seeds with a multi‐cell‐layered endotesta. Embryological evidence, like molecular evidence, further shows that, in Cneoroideae, Harrisonia probably has affinities to a group of Bottegoa, Cedrelopsis, Cneorum and Ptaeroxylon by sharing a micropyle formed by the inner integument alone and solitary oil cells in the testa. Except for Harrisonia, Cneoroideae are still poorly understood embryologically and further investigations are needed.
