Characterization of maturity and quality of Brazilian apirenic grapes in the São Francisco river Valley

Abstract: The objective of this study was to characterize and correlate maturity and quality of the first varieties of Brazilian seedless grapes 'BRS Clara', 'BRS Linda', 'BRS Morena', and 'Advanced Selection 8' compared with the American variety 'Crimson Seedless' in compliance with the Brazilian Normative/2002 and export standards Advanced Selection 8' is dark reddish, has large clusters, and is a very large ellipsoid berry; 'BRS Morena' is black with medium sized clusters and large berry shaped as ellipsoid to globoi… Show more

“…BRS Morena grapes cultivated based on different treatments (T) reached similar averages, with a small variation. The results obtained in this study were similar to those reported by Manfroi, Mielle, Rizzon, Barradas, and Souza () and Mascarenhas et al () and were higher than those obtained by Santos et al (). The titratable acidity (TA) presented differences only in E and T. Under BPF, SR was lower and TA was higher when compared to BSS.…”

“…Other authors, in the commercial cv. BRS Morena vineyards, obtained higher cluster weights, between 300 and 340 g (Mascarenhas, Silva, Lima, Mendonça, & Holschunh, ; Santos et al, ). Flower abortions, reducing cluster numbers and mass, and in turn reducing vineyard productivity, can be facilitated by very vigorous rootstocks, as verified by Lira, Moares, Souza, Sales, and Leão () in cv.…”

“…Information on the quality attributes and functional properties of these small fruits can guide farmers to choose the cultivars (cvs) that could be planted, thereby enabling greater market visibility, thus adding value to the product. In addition to providing information to consumers and farmers, the characterization should also be taken into account when new breeding programs are designed (Mascarenhas et al, 2012), because genotype, cultivation system or environmental conditions could affect the metabolism and production of antioxidant compounds (Hassimotto et al, 2008;Tarazona-Díaz et al, 2011). Due to health concerns, nowadays consumers increasingly demand fresh and healthy fruits and vegetables (Rodríguez-Hidalgo et al, 2010), and it is well know that some bioactive constituents in natural plant products have the ability to protect from degenerative illnesses and the production of free radicals.…”
