Evaluation of behavioral states among morning and evening active healthy individuals

Abstract: The Horne-Östberg questionnaire partly covers some factors that may be important determinants of peak time and characterize patterns of behavior. We conducted a study for the evaluation of self-reported behavioral states (hunger sensation, availability for study, physical exercise, solving daily problems, and time preferences) as expressions of underlying cyclic activity. Three hundred and eighteen community subjects without history of medical, psychiatric, or sleep disorders were evaluated in a cross-sectiona… Show more

“…Intermediate types predominated in the sample investigated. Evening types were more frequent than morning types, as already observed in other adolescent and student populations (Hidalgo & Caumo, 2002). However, there was no association between age and morningness–eveningness dimension in this study, may be because of the homogeneity of the age group.…”

“…The causal explanations of the origins of fatigue have been divided into three main areas: 1) centrally related immune factors that change brain functions and impact cognition, mood and behavior changes [47]; 2) neuroendocrine and immune contributors [28] -stressors to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, the autonomic nervous system and the immune system -that impact how the body to responds appropriately to stress and inflammation; and 3) peripheral factors such as mitochondrial dysfunction related to fatigue decline in skeletal muscle function and muscle loss [24]. HIV infection, deconditioning, chronic inflammation and physiological and psychological side effects from antiretroviral treatments such as poor sleep and depression, stigma and anxiety most likely impact all three mechanisms [43,49].…”
