This study evaluated the toxicity of biofertilizers using lettuce seed as bioindicator and maize as cropped plant. The experiment was carried out with five treatments consisting of biofertilizers and manure obtained from mixtures of cattle and ovine litter: T1 -100% cattle manure; T2 -50% cattle manure and 50% ovine litter; T3 -75% cattle manure and 25% ovine litter; T4 -75% ovine litter and cattle 25%; T5 -100% ovine litter and T0 control -distilled water. Five concentrations of each treatment were used with 3, 6, 9, 12 and 15% in three replications submitted to biological testing. The use of biofertilizers with high EC negatively influences lettuce seed germination, the shoots of seedlings when diluted act as a stimulant. The biofertilizer did not affect the maize seeds germination and the seedlings growth was stimulated.Additional keywords: cattle manure; conductivity; ovine litter. ResumoO objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a toxicidade de biofertilizantes utilizando sementes de alface como bioindicadoras e de milho como planta cultivada. O experimento contou com cinco tratamentos constituídos por biofertilizantes obtidos de misturas de dejetos de bovinos e cama de ovinos: T 1 -100% dejeto bovino; T 2 -50% dejeto bovino e 50% cama de ovino; T 3 -75% dejeto bovino e 25% cama de ovino; T 4 -75% cama de ovino e 25% dejeto bovino; T 5 -100% cama de ovino e a testemunha T 0 -água destilada. Cinco concentrações de cada tratamento foram utilizadas sendo elas 3, 6, 9, 12 e 15%, com três repetições, submetidas ao teste biológico. Os resultados mostram que a utilização de biofertilizantes com alta C.E. influencia negativamente a porcentagem de germinação das sementes de alface, mas agem como estimulantes do comprimento de parte aérea de plântulas. Em sementes de milho, o uso dos biofertilizantes não influencia a porcentagem de germinação, porém o crescimento de plântulas é estimulado.Palavras-chave adicionais: cama de ovino; condutividade elétrica; dejeto bovino.

Allelopathic research in Brazil

In this article, we review allelopathy studies conducted in Brazil or involving plant species that occur in the country. Conceptions and misconceptions associated with allelopathy, as well as some international criteria to be applied in allelopathic research, are presented and discussed. We observed a sharp increase in the number of papers on this subject conducted in Brazil between 1991 and 2010. However, most studies are conducted under laboratory conditions, lack a clear hypothesis or a solid justification, and typically make use of target species that do not co-exist with the donor species under natural conditions. We also found that most studies do not take the additional steps in order to purify and identify the bioactive molecules. We recommend that further studies be conducted in order to explore the potential of plant biodiversity in Brazil. Such studies could lead to the development of new molecular structures (allelochemicals) that could be used in the control of pests and weeds, thereby reducing the use of the harmful synthetic herbicides that are currently being widely employed.

Plants produce and store many products of secondary metabolism that are released into the environment and can influence direct or indirectly on nearby organisms. Thus, this study investigated the allelopathic potential of extracted soil solution from an area with cover crops according to germination and early development of beggartick. Soil solution was extracted in an area where black oats, turnip and hairy vetch were grown. The concentrated solution was tested in sand substrate while the dilutions were tested in 100; 200; 300 and 400 ml L -1 germitest paper substrate, plus the control treatment on beggartick. Germination was tested for 10 days and the early development for 20 days. Twenty seeds or seedlings were distributed in gerbox, with three replications and the experimental design was completely randomized (CRD). Soil solution showed considerable changes on beggartick germination only in the last collections, mainly with extracted solution in an area cropped with turnip and hairy vetch. The results, in this case, were more significant when germitest was used than with sand substrate. Therefore, it is recommended these cover crops in crop rotation, aiming to reduce beggartick infestation in a long term.
