The experiment was conducted at the Chemistry Laboratory of the University of Mato Grosso, Brazil, from June to August 2010. The treatments consisted of mixtures of six herbicides (glyphosate SC, glyphosate WG, lactofen CE, fomesafen SC, haloxifop-R CE, and fluazifop-p-butyl EW) with six types of insecticide (methomyl CS, clorpirifos CE, teflubenzuron SC, triflumuron SC, cipermetrin CE, and tiametoxam + lambda-cialotrin SC) in the absence and presence of two pH reducers (pyroligneous acid and boric acid) with four replications. A scale from 1 to 5 was used to evaluate the degree of mismatch, where 1 is immediate separation of the mixture (which is recommended not to apply), and 5 is homogeneity of the mixtures. The major physical incompatibilities in the herbicide and insecticide mixtures were observed in the presence of glyphosate WG and lactofen SC. Pyroligneous acid and boric acid showed to be good alternatives as pH reducers in the preparation of sprays using the herbicide and insecticide mixtures. Tank mixtures of glyphosate formulation SC, clorpirifos CE, and lactofen CE + clorpirifos CE must be avoided.

Available information on physical compatibility and stability of pesticide mixtures is scarce and often divergent. This knowledge is of fundamental importance in the success of pest, disease, and weed control programs. Compatibility and stability of two glyphosate formulations (WG and SL) in a mixture with fluazinam + deltamethrin + trifloxystrobin/cyproconazole at four diluted water concentrations and different times were evaluated under laboratory conditions. The evaluations were performed at the following time intervals: immediately after mixing and 1, 5, 10, 30, 120, 900, and 1,440 minutes after the mixing of pesticides. Scores were assigned on a scale ranging from 1 to 5, where 1 meant immediate separation of compounds and 5 the perfect mixture stability up to 30 minutes. The data were submitted to descriptive statistics and presented in tables. Mixture stability differed in glyphosate formulations and their concentrations due to the used spray solution volume. Distinct mixtures between glyphosate (SL) and deltamethrin, as well as between glyphosate (WG) and deltamethrin, were physically compatible when stirred again even after 24 hours at rest. The mixture containing glyphosate (SL), deltamethrin, and fluazinam and trifloxystrobin/ cyproconazole was incompatible at a volume of 30 L ha-1.

The Brazil’s economy is supported by agribusiness, however, the continuous cycle of food production and favorable climate contributes to the incidence of pest insects all year round. The fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is considered the main insect in the corn crop, due to voracity of the caterpillars and occurrence throughout the crop cycle. Therefore, the chemical control has been demanded considerably, causing emergence of populations resistant to the different products, as well as implications in the environment. Thus, studies are needed to evaluate the efficiency of chemical insecticide control according to the susceptibility and the stages of biological development of the pest. The objective of this work was to evaluate the performance of isolated and combined insecticides for the control of S. frugiperda caterpillars under laboratory conditions. In the residual and direct contact bioassays, 8 treatments with 5 replications were used in a completely randomized design, performed with 2nd and 5th instar. The results showed that by residual contact after 72 hours, clofenapir + zeta-cypermethrin treatment had 100% efficacy in the mortality of both instars. When applied via direct contact 72 hours later, the combined treatments showed an efficiency above 80%. However, for an integrated pest management program, where it was recommended the association of different control tactics, the management of insecticides with clofenapir + zeta-cypermethrin was effective with 100% control efficiency in both instars.
