Macroscopic description of teeth of Azara's agouti (Dasyprocta azarae)

Abstract: The teeth of Azara's agouti (Dasyprocta azarae) were described macroscopically in order to provide biological data on one of the largest wild rodents of the Americas. Radiography was taken on six heads and the teeth were described. Enamel surrounds the coronal dentin, projects to the roots and is present as parallel inner laminae in buccolingual direction. The dentin is located among the enamel laminae and surrounds the pulp horns. The cementum is located internally to the enamel laminae. On the lingua… Show more

“…In the teeth of the agouti (Fig. 1E), neither the crown nor the root can be distinguished because the enamel covers substantially the entire length of the tooth [24]. Besides, the Mundurucu decorate hair and ears with cotton cords embellished with red and black feathers of a black-billed toucan (Ramphastos vitellinus).…”

“…The jaw could move forward and create two positions: one where the incisors occluded while the cheek teeth did not and another where the cheek teeth occluded but the incisors did not [ 24 ]. The agouti’s ( D. azarae ) premolars had a deciduous form followed by the permanent premolars, whereas molars had no deciduous form [ 25 ]. The same dental formula for an adult agouti was found ( D. prymnolopha ) with the teeth of the lower jaw larger than their corresponding upper ones [ 26 ].…”

“…The top of the head, neck, and middle of the back between the shoulders are sometimes dark with long bristles; the ears are small and bare, similar to the tail that is almost vestigial (Smythe, 1987;Emmons and Feer, 1997). In addition, they possess four long and curved incisor teeth, whose macroscopic characteristics reveal structure similar to that of other mammals (Oliveira et al, 2012). Between males and females there is no sexual dimorphism; therefore, to differentiate them, it is necessary to perform sexing through palpation, where the difference between the male's prominent penis and the female's two vaginal folds, forming the vulva, is easily observed (Guimarães et al, 2009).…”

“…Furthermore, the claws of the forelimbs are slightly arched, indicating the ability to excavate, although they are not true diggers. The hindlimbs are much larger than forelimbs, enabling them to jump (Oliveira et al, 2012).…”
