ABSTRACT:The trauma consists of a physical shock of great impact resulting from an abrupt or violent action that causes damages of varying extent in the body and is considered the main cause of death in the first four decades of life. The present study aimed to collect data on trauma patients hospitalized at the public hospital of Paracatu-MG, in order to establish the prevalence of type of traumas; to characterize the victim is epidemiological profile and the main causes of the disease, to define the lethality and to inform the duration of hospitalization. This is a cross-sectional retrospective study based on the analysis of 544 medical records of traumatized patients of the Municipal Hospital of Paracatu-MG, from January to December in 2014. The results showed that the month of December was the month with the highest number of traumatized patients. There was a higher prevalence among males aged between 20-29 years. It was verified that the main cause of the injuries was accident by fall, the second most related cause was traffic accident. Violence was the third largest cause, gunshot assaults having the most significant percentage. Orthopedical traumas were the most prevalent trauma. The highest coefficient of lethality was 24%, which corresponded to severe TBI. It is concluded that there are a high number of trauma cases in Paracatu-MG, which demonstrates the need to measures to prevent domestic accidents, investments in traffic education programs, and improvement of public safety.

RESUMO ABSTRACTAims: To assess the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of hepatic trauma in victims referred to the Forensic Department of Palmas, State of Tocantins, Brazil. Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed with all the victims referred to the Forensic Department of Palmas from January 2006 to December 2010, to investigate violent deaths with severe damage to the liver tissue. The data were collected from the Forensic Department records. The following data were evaluated: sex, age, mechanism of injury (in case of motor vehicle accidents, the type of vehicle involved), types of trauma associated with abdominal trauma, presence of abdominal lesions associated with hepatic injury, the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Organ Injury Scale, and number of deaths caused directly by hepatic trauma. The statistical analysis included absolute and relative frequencies of the variables. Results: A total of 241 (13.4%) out of 1,796 victims had liver trauma, among whom 85.5% were male and 42.9% belonged to the 21-30 year age group. Motor vehicle accidents were the major cause of trauma in 143 cases, (59.3%), involving mainly motorcycles (53 cases or 37%). Blunt trauma was the most frequent mechanism of injury, having occurred in 179 cases (74.3%). The right lobe was injured in 98 cases (40.7%). A total of 147 victims (61%) had polytrauma. Splenic injury, present in 65 (27%) of the cases, was mostly associated with liver trauma. Liver injury of grade II was detected in 102 cases (42.4%) and was therefore the most prevalent type of damage. Twenty-one (8.7%) deaths were directly related to liver trauma. Conclusions: Blunt injury, caused mainly by motor vehicle accidents (especially with motorcycles), was the most common type of liver trauma observed in violent deaths, according to the records of the Forensic Department of Palmas. Objective:to analyze the associated factors with empyema in patients with post-traumatic retained hemothorax.Methods:prospective observational study. Data were collected in patients undergoing PD during emergency duty. Variables analyzed were age, sex, mechanism of injury, side of the chest injury, intrathoracic complications of RH, laparotomy, specific injuries, rib fractures, trauma scores, days to diagnosis, diagnostic method of RH, primary indication of PD, initial volume drained, length of the first tube removal, surgical procedure. Cumulative incidence of empyema, pneumonia and pulmonary contusion and the proportion of patients with empyema or without empyema in each category of each variable analyzed were obtained.Results: the cumulative incidence of PD among trauma patients was 1.83% and the RH among those with PD was 10.63%. There were 20 cases of empyema (32.8%). Most were male in the age from 20 to 29, victims of injury by firearm on the left side of the thorax. The incidence of empyema in patients with injury by firearms was lower compared to those with stab wound or blunt trauma; higher among those with drained volume between 300 and 599 ml. The median hospital lenght of stay was higher among those with empyema.Conclusion:the incidence of PD was 1.83% and RH was 10.63%, these results are consistent with the low severity of the patients involved in this study and consistent with the literature. The incidence of empyema proved to be negatively associated with the occurrence of injury by firearms and positively associated with a drained volume between 300 and 599 ml, compared with lower or higher volumes.
