Swine manure post-treatment technologies for pathogenic organism inactivation

Abstract: ) and physical treatment (3 a 4 log: 220 mJ UV radiation cm -2 ). The biological treatment (anaerobiosis) also promotes the pathogen reduction of swine manure, however with lower efficiency (1 to 2 log). The selection of the treatment should consider: implementation and operation cost, necessity of preliminary treatment, efficiency obtained and destination of the treated manure (agricultural use, water reuse). Brazilian regulation does not have specific guidelines for the microbiological quality of animal prod… Show more

“…Not only can A. baumannii survive anaerobic conditions and a competitive environment but also it tolerates high concentrations of heavy metals. The finding calls for bacteriological analysis and disinfection (alkaline, thermal, biological, chemical, or physical) 36 of liquid swine manure before it is applied as fertilizer in traditional extensive agriculture.…”

“…Its mode of action as an oxidizing agent relies on chemical processes that results in the destruction of cellular structures of pathogenic bacteria either completely or partially by raising the pH value above 12. At such given elevated pH, a broad spectrum of microbial activity is limited [ 97 ]. Bilotta and Kunz [ 97 ] emphasized the need of pretreatment of the waste to remove suspended solids, which may influence the efficiency of the disinfection process.…”

“…It is however an energy intensive process that could be economically feasible when waste thermal energy is available, such as in biogas production plants. UV irradiation can achieve high reduction of enteric bacterial and protozoan pathogens (2-5 log 10 ), however some viruses are relatively resistant to UV irradiation (Bilotta and Kunz, 2013;Sobsey et al, 2006). UV irradiation does not generate any unwanted residuals and does not alter the nutritional composition of WaW.…”
