Show more

“…The evaluation of the diameter distribution at the community level has been shown to be an important tool for understanding vertical structure in forests. On the other hand, it may be insufficient to assess the condition of the tree component, and therefore analyses at the population level are needed (Martins 1991, Felfili 1997, Paula et al 2004, Carvalho & Nascimento 2009). Kurtz & Araú jo (2000) postulated that equilibrated populations have nearly balanced diameter distributions, tending to produce an inverted-J curve, which is typical of species with abundant regeneration and a stable population structure.…”

“…The Liocourt q-ratio pointed to high maintenance rates for diameter classes, especially for the smaller diameters. This is a recurring pattern for native populations of tropical forests (Carvalho and Nascimento 2009). The q values below the mean are not indicative, in this case, of maintenance problems in higher classes, since the larger individuals in such groups were the first to establish in the area.…”

“…Although the FSM has a history of human disturbance, no timber extraction or other type of human activities has taken place there in the last 60 years. Nevertheless, this lack of large individuals may be due to mortality of older, larger individuals after intense disturbance or by timber extraction, as observed in remnants of Amazon rain forest (Laurance et al 2000) and submontane Atlantic Forest (Carvalho & Nascimento 2009). Therefore, the exclusion of individuals of the canopy could favor an increase in the number of small individuals, suggesting that there was a change in the successional processes and in the current structural conformation in this forest fragment.…”
