Brazil is one of the major banana producers in the world, and consequently generates a great amount of residues from this crop, which could be utilized in particleboard production. The present work aimed to evaluate the effect of different chemical treatments of the particles of Musa sp. pseudostem, on their chemical and physical properties (basic density), and on the physical and mechanical properties of the particleboards produced with the same material. Five treatments were applied to the particles: 1) without treatment (control); 2) 2% acetic acid; 3) 0.5% NaOH; 4) acetone (1/1 in volume/volume); and 5) water. Panels with medium density were produced (0.70 g/cm³), bonded with 12% (in relation to the particle mass) of urea-formaldehyde adhesive. The pressing cycle was conducted at 160º C, under 4 MPa, during 8 min. The results obtained indicated that the chemical treatments performed in the particles of banana tree pseudostem affected their chemical composition. The basic density of the particles was 0.10 g/cm³, and only the NaOH treatment led to its increase for values around 0.13 g/cm3. The panels produced with particles without treatment (control) and particles treated with acetic acid presented the lowest values of water absorption and thickness swelling after 2 and 24 h of immersion. Mechanical properties of all the panels produced were below the minimum recommended by the standard CS 236-66 (COMMERCIAL STANDARD - CS, 1968).

RESUMO -O segmento produtivo da madeira compensada passa por reestruturações mundiais. Este artigo buscou avaliar o desempenho produtivo de empresas paranaenses, bem como sugerir parâmetros de eficiência, os quais podem aumentar a competitividade das empresas. Aqui são avaliados indicadores de eficiência produtiva, obtidos através de amostragem direta em uma parcela significativa de empresas de compensado do Paraná, durante os meses de março a junho de 2002 (42% das empresas paranaenses) e de março a maio de 2007 (34% das empresas). Foi observado crescimento na eficiência produtiva de determinados tipos de empresas, principalmente nas empresas de compensados de Pinus. Esse crescimento está baseado no uso mais intensivo da capacidade nominal e não necessariamente na melhoria tecnológica. Outro tipo de empresa que obteve melhorias foi a de compensados para construção civil, impulsionado pelo crescimento desse setor. As demais empresas mantiveram suas produções constantes, mesmo com o crescimento geral da economia brasileira. Assim, através dessas informações é possível embasar e definir estratégias empresariais e setoriais.Abstract -Plywood mills have been changing their productive structure worldwide. These changes have also been taking place in Paraná's industries. The impacts are measure in this article by production efficiency indicators for two periods. The analyses allowed the conclusions that: only plywood mills that produced plywood using pinewood for exportation are better adapted to globalization. The other plywood mills made products traded in the national market and did not increase their productions, improved or updated production systems. Production indicators can therefore be used to compare manufacturers or plan public or private actions.

This work aimed to evaluate the effect of veneer inclusion with different wood species, and also different levels of pressing pressure applied in the moment of the veneer inclusion over physicalmechanical properties of already consolidated OSB (Oriented Strand Board) panels. Treatments were arranged in factorial scheme 4 x 2 (four wood types for veneer inclusion -Pinus oocarpa, Eucalyptus urophylla, Parkia gigantocarpa and Brosimum parinariodes; and two pressing pressures -1 and 2 MPa) and also a control (without veneer inclusion). Veneer inclusion was made with 180 g.cm -2 phenol formaldehyde adhesive, in a simple glue line, perpendicular to the external layer of panels. The pressing cycle used was 150ºC for 4 minutes under pressure 1 or 2 MPa pressure depending on the pre-established treatment. It was possible to conclude that: 1) Veneer inclusion with pines, eucalypt and amapá promoted significant improvements for physical-mechanical properties of OSB panels, highlighting eucalypt and amapá; 2) There was not a significant effect of the level of pressing pressure over mechanical properties of OSB with veneer inclusion; and 3) Regarding physical properties, the highest pressure level (2 MPa) promoted a negative effect in some properties, while veneer inclusion the pressure of 1 MPa generally promoted significant improvement of all physical properties.
