Distinct features of Pepper yellow mosaic virus isolates from tomato and sweetpepper

Abstract: Determination of virus diversity in the field is vital to support a sustainable breeding program for virus resistance of horticultural crops. The present study aimed to characterize four field potyvirus isolates found naturally infecting sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum) (Sa66 and Sa115) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) (IAC3 and Sa21) plants. Their biological characteristics revealed differences among the isolates in their ability to infect distinct Capsicum spp. and tomato genotypes, and in the severity of … Show more

“…The green peach aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer), causes direct damage to leaves by the secretion of phytotoxins 25. General aphid damage is indirect: sooty moulds grow on secreted honeydew, and many aphids can transmit potyviruses 3. Another aphid pest found in subtropical covered peppers is Aphis gossypii (Glover) 26.…”

“…Sweet pepper ( Capsicum annuum L.) is an important crop in all parts of the world. In open fields, where yield is ⩽12 t ha −1 , sweet pepper is subject to a number of pests, including beetles,1 caterpillars,2 aphids3 and thrips 4. As an alternative to exclusively treating pests with insecticides, integrated pest management (IPM) includes various cultural, biological and chemical tactics.…”

“…Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV) is a typical potyvirus recently described infecting sweet pepper (Capsicum annnum) (Inoue-Nagata et al 2002) and tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) (Cunha et al 2004). It is closely related to Potato virus Y (PVY), to such an extent that PVY and PepYMV isolates cannot be differentiated based on host range and symptomatology (Truta et al 2004).…”

“…Pepper yellow mosaic virus is a pest of solanaceous plants, such as peppers (Moura et al, 2011) 9 , tomatoes (da Cunha et al 2004) 10 and garden petunias (Duarte et al, 2021) 11 . The aphid Aphis gossypii has been associated with the transmission of this virus (Souza et al 2020) 12 .…”
