Fotofísica de carotenóides e o papel antioxidante de b-caroteno

Abstract: PHOTOPHYSICS OF CAROTENOIDS AND THE ANTIOXIDANT ROLE OF β-CAROTENE.Carotenoid polyenes play a wide role in nature and their photophysical properties make of these pigments a focus of research in photochemistry, photobiology and photomedicine. Some aspects of the singlet and triplet states and, their interaction with molecular and singlet oxygen and free radicals are briefly reviewed in this article. Keywords: carotenoids; β-carotene; singlet oxygen. DIVULGAÇÃO INTRODUÇÃODe todos os pigmentos naturais, os carote… Show more

“…In addition, lipid peroxidation can be related to the reduction of chlorophyllous pigments, particularly carotenoids, which function as photoprotective structures (Taiz e Zieger, 2013). The photoprotection mechanism involves the suppression of the triplet states of chlorophyll, thus avoiding formation of singlet oxygen ( 1 O2) (Cardoso, 1997;Taiz e Zieger, 2013). Therefore, the carotenoids reduction leads to increased free radicals in plants, which triggers a series of processes such as, for example, lipid peroxidation.…”

“…Among the natural pigments, carotenoids are considered important in human nutrition because they include precursors of vitamin A with antioxidant action (β-carotene) and other antioxidants such as lycopene (CHITARRA; CHITARRA, 1990;BARTLEY;SCOLNIK, 1995;CARDOSO, 1997). Chloroplasts contain most of the enzymes necessary for the synthesis of chlorophyll, fatty acids and galactolipids, and carotenoids, among other compounds (KROGMANN, 1973).…”

“…Os carotenóides são conhecidos ainda pela sua eficiência em desativar 1 O 2 e espécies tripletes de moléculas fotossensibilizadas, além de sua habilidade em interagir com outras espécies reativas, formando adutos ou carotenóides radicalares, inibindo processos oxidativos 89 . A eficácia dos carotenóides está relacionada ao número de li-…”
