Computed tomography-guided percutaneous biopsy of pancreatic masses using pneumodissection

Abstract: Objective To describe the technique of computed tomography-guided percutaneous biopsy of pancreatic tumors with pneumodissection. Materials and Methods In the period from June 2011 to May 2012, seven computed tomography-guided percutaneous biopsies of pancreatic tumors utilizing pneumodissection were performed in the authors' institution. All the procedures were performed with an automatic biopsy gun and coaxial system with Tru-core needles. The biopsy specimens were histologically assessed. Results In all the… Show more

“…Alternatives to avoid traversing vital organs during biopsy include hydrodissection and pneumodissection. [ 13 14 ] With these techniques, either a 0.9% saline solution (in hydrodissection) or air (in pneumodissection) is injected to displace the parietal pleura and expand the posterior paravertebral space while simultaneously advancing the coaxial needle carefully under CT control. The location of the lesion can also be confirmed with intravenous contrast administration to improve the diagnostic accuracy of the procedure.…”

“…Ante el avance de la aguja, se deberá corroborar la posición de las asas intestinales (especialmente si la BP se realiza con TC). 1 En caso de ser necesario, la hidrodisección o la neumodisección pueden ser útiles para desplazarlas [25][26][27][28] .…”

“…Several techniques such as trans-hepatic, trans-gastric, hydrodissective, and pneumodissective approaches have been developed to avoid damage to visceral organs [15,16,17,18]. Over the past 10 years, our institute has developed a fat-transversing route approach for pancreatic biopsies which is able to reach most tumors in the pancreas without penetrating organs or vessels.…”
