OBJETIVO: O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a freqüência e os tipos de variações anatômicas do complexo ostiomeatal. MATERIAIS E MÉTODOS: Foram revisadas 200 tomografias computadorizadas de pacientes com suspeita clínica de sinusopatia. RESULTADOS: Observamos um ou mais tipos de variações anatômicas em 83,5% dos pacientes, as mais freqüentes envolvendo o corneto médio (84%) e o septo nasal (34%). Outras variantes anatômicas comuns encontradas foram a presença de aeração do agger nasi e células etmoidais infra-orbitárias (células de Haller). CONCLUSÃO: As variações anatômicas do complexo ostiomeatal anterior são muito corriqueiras. As mais freqüentes envolvem o corneto médio e o septo nasal.

Many score methods have been created to measure paranasal sinus abnormalities seen under CT scan. Currently, the Lund-Mackay staging system is widely accepted. However, its results may be affected by the development in children. Aim: To assess the precision and accuracy of a new tomography score, called "opacificationdevelopment ratio". It translates the percentage of sinus area that is opaque. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was prospectively conducted in patients ranging from 0-18 years of age who underwent CT scan assessment of rhinosinusitis. Two independent radiologists examined each scan twice, using both the Lund system and the ratio herein proposed. Results: The opacification-development ratio reached substantial intra and inter-examiner agreement, similar to the Lund system (Kappa > 0.60). Considering the Lund system as the gold standard, the most accurate cutoff point was approximately 15 (sensitivity and specificity approach 90%). There was a strong linear correlation between the two methods (r > 90). Conclusions: opacification-development ratio is precise and correlates with the Lund system. A cutoff point set at 15 could be used to call a test positive.

Aim: The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between nasal septum deviations, volumes of paranasal sinuses and Lund-Mackay scores related with the presence of rhinosinusitis in conebeam computed tomography images, which is currently been used in dental radiology. Material and method: CBCT images of 130 patients aged between 18 and 79 years with paranasal sinus area in our study were evaluated retrospectively. The correlation between the Lund-Mackay scores related with the presence of rhinosinusitis, the paranasal sinus volumes and nasal septum deviations which is an anatomic variation commonly seen in the community were examined. Results: Of the 130 patients who constituted the study group, 103 (79.2%) had nasal septum deviations, 53 (51.5%) to the right and 50 (48.5%) to the left. The total Lund-Mackay scores of individuals with nasal septum deviation were significantly higher than those without nasal septum deviation (p≤0.05). According to the results of our study, right and left maxillary, frontal, sphenoid and ethmoid sinus volumes were 13.6 cm³, 14.5 cm³, 6.2 cm³, 9.7 cm³, 8.7 cm³ respectively. Conclusion: As an alternative of Computed Tomography, which is accepted as gold standard to evaluate the relationship between nasal septum deviation and paranasal sinus volume with the presence of rhinosinusitis, Cone Beam Computerized Tomography, which allows a 3-dimensional radiological examination with a lower dose of radiation, may be used instead.
