Spray drift and droplet spectrum from dicamba sprayed alone or mixed with adjuvants using air-induction nozzles

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the spray drift and droplet spectrum of dicamba applied alone or with potential drift-reducing adjuvants, using air-induction flat fan nozzles. Standard (XR and TT) and air-induction (AIXR and TTI) nozzles were evaluated in a wind tunnel. The adjuvants used were polymer, ammonium sulfate, vegetable oil, and phosphatidylcholine. The applications were conducted at 276 kPa pressure and 3.5 m s-1 wind speed. The droplet spectrum was measured using a laser diffraction syst… Show more

“…Adjuvants can be classified as evaporation reduction substances, penetrating agents, adhesives, spreaders, anti-foaming agents, drift reducers, and conditioners 13 , besides other function categories. It has been observed, for example, that combinations of dicamba with different adjuvants have the potential to reduce pH and increase droplet size and uniformity in addition to other physicochemical effects 9 , 14 .…”

“…Another adjuvant that has a broad spectrum of use is phosphatidylcholine (lecithin) with propionic acid. Studies show that this adjuvant has as main characteristic the drift reduction due to an increase in the size of droplets generated during the applications (ALVES et al, 2018;ROSS Jr. et al, 2018). However, adverse effects from the use of this compound were observed by Sanches et al (2018), such as a reduction in the effectiveness of the acaricide when used with this adjuvant.…”

“…The concerning about losses due to spray drift of 2,4-D has increased due to the release of cultivars tolerant to this herbicide and the consequent increase of its use. Therefore, researches are needed to develop adequate technologies to reduce the harmful effect of spray drift of 2,4-D, such as anti-drift hydraulic nozzles with air induction (Alves et al, 2018), use of adjuvants (Oliveira et al, 2015), and new formulations of 2,4-D as the choline salt of the Enlist TM technology (Enlist, 2019).…”
