This study aimed to evaluate the relationship among traits related to yield and nutritive value of alfalfa genotypes grown under deficit and full irrigation conditions. Seventy-seven alfalfa genotypes were evaluated in two different cuts, the first one with full irrigation, and the second, with water deficit. A randomized block design with three replications was used. The evaluated traits were vigor, plant height, dry matter biomass, stem-to-leaf ratio, dry matter percentage, leaf and stem protein contents, in vitro dry matter digestibility, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, and lignin. Significant interaction between genotypes and environments was reported for vigor, plant height, and lignin. The correlation between traits and path analysis of dry matter biomass was performed for each cut, aiming to identify auxiliary traits for indirect selection. Water availability did not alter the phenotypic and genotypic correlations, only their magnitudes. Regardless of the environment, plant height is one of the most promising traits for the selection of alfalfa genotypes with higher dry matter biomass since it showed a high direct effect in the same sense of its phenotypic correlations. However, the coefficient of determination obtained by the model applied to full irrigation was higher than that of the water-deficit environment, indicating the importance of variables not included in this study in the determination of alfalfa dry matter biomass under dry conditions.

Alfalfa breeding aimed at trait improvement for livestock feed takes longer periods of time, if compared to many other crops. Therefore, better selection methods are necessary for the success of alfalfa breeding programs. Although knowing about selection methods is quite important, there is a notable lack of information, as regards successful solutions. This study aimed to use direct, indirect and simultaneous selection methods for selecting alfalfa cultivars, based on yield traits and nutritive value. The evaluated traits were subdivided into two groups: forage yield and nutritive value. Selection gains were estimated by direct, indirect and simultaneous selection for each group, considering the selection of the 25 % best cultivars. Direct and indirect selections among genotype averages are not efficient to provide the desirable responses to the whole set of traits. The results for simultaneous selection, using the Tai index, provided a more balanced gain distribution to the set of traits in all cuts. The simultaneous selection allowed the identification of the 5681 and Verdor cultivars in the first cut, as well as ProINTA Patricia in the second cut, as superior in the two groups of evaluated traits.

RESUMO -Com a finalidade de determinar as doses de N, P e K para obter a máxima produção econômica de forragem para a linhagem UPF 87111, nos sistemas de plantio convencional e plantio com cobertura morta, foram instalados experimentos em Latossolo VermelhoAmarelo Distrófico típico, em São Carlos, SP. O delineamento experimental foi o fatorial fracionado tipo (1/2)4 3 com dois blocos ao acaso, total de 32 parcelas, sem repetição. Os tratamentos foram quatro doses de N e de K 2 O (0, 70, 140 e 210 kg ha -1 ), como uréia e cloreto de potássio, e quatro doses de P 2 O 5 (0, 60, 120, 180 kg ha -1 ), como superfosfato triplo. As doses de N, P e K para a produção de forragem de aveia com máxima receita líquida foram, em kg ha -1 para o plantio convencional: N =160, P 2 O 5 = 180, K 2 O = 180 e para o plantio com cobertura morta: N = 200, P 2 O 5 = 120, K 2 O = 95, com produções de matéria seca de, respectivamente, 7.398 kg ha -1 e 8.111 kg ha -1 .Palavras-chave: Avena sativa, fósforo, nitrogênio, potássio, produção de forragem Response of Oats to Fertilization on Red Yellow Latosol in Two Planting SystemsABSTRACT -Two field experiments were carried out on a Red Yellow Latosol (Hapludox), at São Carlos, SP in order to determine the rates of N, P, and K to obtain maximum economic return per area of forage yield for the oat line UPF 87111 grown in two planting systems: conventional tillage and mulch-covered. The treatments consisted of four rates of N and K 2 O (0, 70, 140, and 210 kg ha -1 ), using urea and potassium chloride, and four rates of P 2 O 5 (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha -1 ), using triple superphosphate. The N, P, and K rates for maximum profit were, in kg ha -1 for conventional tillage: N = 160, P 2 O 5 = 180, K 2 O = 180; and for mulch-covered: N = 200, P 2 O 5 = 120, K 2 O = 95 resulting in forage yields of, respectively, 7,398 and 8,111 kg ha -1 of dry matter. In both planting systems, the use of nitrogen resulted in higher forage yield per unit of applied fertilizer.
