Least limiting water range in assessing compaction in a Brazilian Cerrado latosol growing sugarcane

Abstract: SUMMARYIn the south-central region of Brazil, there is a trend toward reducing the sugarcane inter-harvest period and increasing traffic of heavy harvesting machinery on soil with high water content, which may intensify the compaction process. In this study, we assessed the structural changes of a distroferric Red Latosol (Oxisol) by monitoring soil water content as a function of the Least Limiting Water Range (LLWR) and quantified its effects on the crop yield and industrial quality of the first ratoon crop o… Show more

“…This result characterized the soil as physically limiting for plant growth due to compaction. Similar results were reported by Lima et al (2012) and Gonçalves et al (2014), indicating that in tropical soils (namely, Oxisols) penetration resistence is the main variable associated with the decrease in the LLWR (soil physical quality).…”

“…However, the simplified nonlinear model used by BUSSCHER & SOJKA (1987) and tested by BUSSCHER (1990), relating soil bulk density and gravimetric moisture as SPR controlling variables, is currently the most used to represent such relationship (TORMENA et al, 1998;CHEN et al, 2014;GONÇALVES et al, 2014;MOREIRA et al, 2014b).…”
