In the Brazilian Cerrado Biome, Latosols (Oxisols) predominate on gently sloping areas and are highly suitable for the development of mechanised agriculture. However, inappropriate management may lead to reduced crop yields and environmental degradation. We examined the relationships between compression behaviour and texture of Latosols to support decisions on the sustainable use and management of agricultural land. We collected soil samples in 10 Latosols with variable textures under native vegetation and determined the oxide content, bulk and particle density, total porosity, water retention curves, and preconsolidation pressure at different water potentials to develop preconsolidation pressure models. Our results showed that soil texture influenced soil physical properties, that is, an increase in the clay content enhanced the total porosity and water retention and decreased bulk density. Consequently, the susceptibility of these soils to compaction increased with an increase in the clay content. Considering the characteristics of the machinery used in intensive Brazilian agriculture, the compaction risk of these soils was considered high, despite the differences in resistance of the soils. In clayey and very clayey soils, some additional compaction is almost inevitable, even when the water content is low. Thus, caution is required in the evaluation of structural changes after mechanised field operations.
SUMMARYThe agricultural potential of Latosols of the Brazilian Cerrado region is high, but when intensively cultivated under inappropriate management systems, the porosity can be seriously reduced, leading to rapid soil degradation. Consequently, accelerated erosion and sedimentation of springs and creeks have been observed. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate structural changes of Latosols in Rio Verde, Goiás, based on the Least Limiting Water Range (LLWR), and relationships between LLWR and other physical properties. Soil samples were collected from the B horizons of five oxidic Latosols representing the textural variability of the Latosols of the Cerrado biome. LLWR and other soil physical properties were determined at various soil compaction degrees induced by uniaxial compression. Soil compaction caused effects varying from enhanced plant growth due to higher water retention, to severe restriction of edaphic functions. Also, inverse relationships were observed between clay content and bulk density values (Bd) under different structural conditions. Bd values corresponding to critical soil macroporosity (Bdc MAC ) were more restrictive to a sustainable use of the studied Latosols than the critical Bd corresponding to LLWR (Bdc LLWR ). The high tolerable compression potential of these oxidic Latosols was related to the high aeration porosity associated to the granular structure.Index Terms: soil compaction, degradation of agricultural soils, soil penetration resistance, water availability, soil texture.
ABSTRACTIn spite of the existence of descriptive information on sandy soils in tropical areas, information regarding management and conservation is scarce. The present study aimed at evaluating changes in the physical-hydric attributes of Orthic Quartzarenic Neosol resulting from use and management having in view the definition of sustainable management systems. The study was carried out in the municipal district of Mineiros, GO, in areas submitted to five systems of use and management of the soil: pasture (PAS), soybeans under no-till (PDS), corn under no-till (PDM), agriculture-livestock integration (IAP), and native savannah (NSAV). Five samples were collected per area, at the depths of 0-10 and 10-20 cm, in the winter of 2005 and in the summer of 2006, for evaluation of bulk density, micro and macroporosity, and saturated soil hydraulic conductivity. The physical-hydric attributes evaluated did not vary within the sampling period. Microporosity values indicate low retention of the water available to the plants. Agricultural land use of the soil promoted alterations in all the appraised attributes. The macroporosity of the soil was the attribute most sensitive to structural changes resulting from management, but it did not, however, present values considered limiting to plant growth. The reduction of saturated soil hydraulic conductivity in human activity area...
This study evaluated the dry matter production and chemical composition of Brachiaria forage grasses in the offseason after corn harvest in integrated crop-livestock system. The experiment was conducted at the Federal Institute of Goiás, Rio Verde Campus, using a randomized complete block experimental design, with four replications. The treatments consisted of the forages: Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu; Brachiaria brizantha cv. Xaraes; Brachiaria brizantha cv. Piata; Brachiaria brizantha cv. MG-4; Brachiaria decumbens and Brachiaria ruziziensis, intercropped in oversown corn for implantation of integrated crop-livestock system. The results showed that intercropping corn with Brachiaria grasses favors the production of high-quality forage in the offseason, and the cultivars of Brachiaria brizantha and Brachiaria decumbens showed higher dry matter production. And cultivars of Brachiaria brizantha (Marandu palisadegrass, Xaraes palisadegrass and Piata palisadegrass) are the most suitable for presenting food of better quality, compared with Brachiaria brizantha cv. MG-4, Brachiaria decumbens and Brachiaria ruziziensis.
