Total lipid and fatty acid accumulation during basidiospore formation in the ectomycorrhizal fungus Pisolithus sp.

Abstract: SUMMARYThe basidiospores of Pisolithus sp. contain large amounts of lipids, indicating provision for future germination in the host rhizosphere. However, the accumulation, composition, and mobilization of lipids during formation and germination of these spores are largely unknown. In this study, lipid storage and fatty acid composition during basidiosporogenesis were analyzed in fresh basidiocarps using bright-field microscopy and gas chromatography. Abundant lipid bodies are found in the hyphae, basidia, and … Show more

“…Although these propagules are used for inoculation in nurseries, mycorrhization is often reported to show medium to low efficiency (Brundrett et al 2005). This fact has stimulated some studies on basidiospore formation aiming at a better understanding of the fungal biology and of the main factors that stimulate the germination process (Campos et al 2008).…”

“…The main stages of basidiosporogenesis in the ectomycorrhizal fungus P. microcarpus have been investigated, especially with respect to the constitution of lipid reserves (Campos et al 2008). P. microcarpus accumulates different fatty acids in its basidiocarp, with oleic acid being the main storage compound in the basidiospores (Campos et al 2008).…”
