Show more

“…Nitrogen losses were dependent on application rate, but overall were higher for ABs (76%). Our results are concordant with those reported by Carneiro et al [30], who reported an average loss of 60% of the added nitrogen in 48 days for ABs (50% dry weight quicklime (CaO)). Thus, although increasing biosolid application rates increases mineralized nitrogen content in soil, it also exacerbates nitrogen loss and thereby, risk of environmental contamination.…”

“…The nitrogen mineralization could be affected by variables as: weather, microbiological, and mineral composition of soil and biosolids. Carneiro et al [30] found that temperature and pH in the alkalinization process influences the activity microbial affecting MR. However, the pH in the mineralization process remained between 6.5 and 7.0.…”

“…However, the addition of lime to the sludge may cause phosphorus precipitation of and nitrogen loss by ammonia volatilization (Carneiro et al, 2005;Fia et al, 2005). Chueri et al (2007) observed that raising the soil pH above neutral, due to the application of limed sludge, affected the morphological parameters and the dry matter of wheat plants, and reduced the manganese availability to plants.…”

“…Sludge from lot VI (STS Ilha do Governador), analyzed in January 2016, presented higher Ca content than the other samples, which may be the result of some punctual source of this nutrient in the drainage basin. According to Carneiro et al (2005), the presence of calcium oxide can raise sewage sludge pH and favor losses through volatilization and leaching, which may explain the lower N contents in lot VI when compared to the other two lots from STS Ilha do Governador.…”
