Background: Infertility requires medical attention and treatment. It is also a disturbing life event with implications in dimensions of the individuals' and the infertile couples' lives (personal, relational and social). Research question: What factors influence marital satisfaction in couples with infertility problems? Objectives: Determine the influence of socio-demographic and obstetric variables, as well as personal history in the adjustment to fertility and marital satisfaction; evaluate the influence of infertility and fertility adjustment on marital satisfaction. Methods: It is a quantitative study with a 106 women being followed at the reproductive medicine unit of Center of Portugal. Data collection was through a questionnaire comprising a socio-demographic component, obstetric history, personal history and Fertility Adjustment Scale (Leal, 2010) and Evaluation Scale regarding Marital Life Satisfaction (Narciso & Costa, 1996) scales. Results: The adjustment to fertility is influenced by age and by the existence of previous pregnancies on "Total Adjustment" (p = 0,013 and p = 0,026, respectively) and by the number of services one attends, in "Life on Hold" (p = 0,024). Marital satisfaction, is influenced by education level and the beginning of infertility treatments on "Sexuality" (p = 0,039). Conclusion: In this research, it became clear that the adjustment to fertility may not influence at all marital satisfaction; however it influences very important aspects of the couple's life. Thus, aspects of marital satisfaction will influence determinants of fertility adjustment, such as "Emotional Intimacy", "Sexuality" and "Communication/Conflict" in "Life on Hold" and "Autonomy" in "Parenting".

MÉTODOS: Estudo caso-controle com 278 mulheres atendidas no Hospital das Clínicas da Universidade Federal de Goiás nos serviços de Reprodução Humana e no Ambulatório de Ginecologia. As mulheres foram distribuídas em grupo caso (168 mulheres inférteis) e grupo controle (110 mulheres férteis), e responderam ao questionário Índice de Função Sexual Feminina (IFSF) para avaliação da função sexual. Calculou-se a odds ratio (OR) para a chance de disfunção sexual nas mulheres inférteis (p<0,05). RESULTADOS: Do total de mulheres analisadas, 33,09% apresentaram disfunção sexual e não houve diferença no escore do IFSF (p=0,29). A prevalência de disfunção sexual entre as mulheres inférteis foi de 36,30%, e entre as férteis, 28,18%; contudo, não houve diferença entre os escores do IFSF (p=0,36). Nos domínios desejo e excitação houve diferença significativa nas mulheres inférteis (p=0,01). Mulheres inférteis apresentam a mesma chance de disfunção sexual em relação às mulheres férteis (OR=1,4; IC95% 0,8-2,4; p=0,2). CONCLUSÃO: Não houve diferenças entre as mulheres inférteis quando comparadas às férteis. Mulheres inférteis submetidas a técnicas de reprodução assistida carecem da abordagem profissional sobre a saúde sexual em relação ao desejo e à excitação. Abstract PURPOSE:To evaluate sexual function in women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques. METHODS: This is a case-control study including 278 women assisted in Human Reproduction services and at the Gynecology Clinic of the University Hospital, Federal University of Goiás, Brazil. The women were divided into a study group (168 infertile women) and a control group (110 fertile women), and they answered the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) questionnaire used the assess the sexual function. We calculated the odds ratio (OR) for the chance of sexual dysfunction in infertile women (p<0.05). RESULTS: Out of the analyzed women, 33.09% reported sexual dysfunction, with no difference in the FSFI score between groups (p=0.29). The prevalence of sexual dysfunction was of 36.30% among infertile women and 28.18% among fertile women; however, there was no difference between FSFI scores (p=0.36). The desire and arousal domains were significantly different among infertile women (p=0.01). Infertile women had the same chances of having sexual dysfunction as fertile women (OR=1.4, 95%CI 0.8-2.4; p=0.2). CONCLUSION: There were no differences between infertile and fertile women. Infertile women undergoing assisted reproduction techniques require professional approach to sexual health regarding desire and arousal.

Background. Psychological tension in the family, along with stress and mental and physical illness, are linked to the reproductive health of parents, as well as to the outcomes of infertility treatments and pregnancy overall.Objective. To compare stress and negative affect (depression, irritability, and anxiety) in families with induced pregnancies (in-vitro fertilization, IFV) vs. natural pregnancies. The relationship between negative affect and stress in pregnant women was explored in both groups. Finally, the study investigated links between negative affect and partner relationships.Design. The sample included 308 women and 278 men from couples with natural conception, and 131 women and 102 men from couples with an IVF pregnancy.Results. Relatively low levels of negative affective states and stress were found in families with both natural and induced pregnancies. Moderate correlations were found between women's negative affect and their stress level in both groups. Significant correlations were found in both groups between negative psychological states of the spouses, as well as between negative psychological states and warmth/hostility in marital relations.Conclusion. The results suggest that psychological states, stress levels, and links between psychological states and quality of family relations are similar in families with IVF and those with natural pregnancies. Further longitudinal research is needed to explore the direction of causal links between the psychological states of the spouses, and between their psychological states and the quality of family relations.
