“…The long and slender epimastigotes among other cultural forms, found in the haemoculture and in the gut of bugs used in xenodiagnosis from T. saimirii-like infected squirrel monkeys (as determined by BS) were found to resemble to those of T. rangeli, described by several workers (e.g. Herbig-Sandreuter 1957, Hoare 1972), but distinct from those of T. minasense (Ziccardi et al 1996). Actually, the cultural forms of T. saimirii described by Rodhain (1937) and Deane and Damasceno (1961) also resemble those of T. rangeli.…”

“…71), born and raised in the laboratory and negative for trypanosomes, was inoculated intraperitoneally (i.p.) and subcutaneously (s.c.) with 0.5 ml of a 13 dayold sample (4th passage) of a culture of T. minasense (Ziccardi et al 1996) which percentage of trypomastigotes was unknown. The search for parasites in the marmoset (No.…”

“…If the invasion and infection of the hemocoel by T. rangeli is eventual, depending on several circunstances, such as the parasite strain and the triatomine bug species, this biological event does not assure the distinction between T. rangeli and T. saimirii. ture media are rather distinct from those of T. rangeli (Dias & Campos-Seabra 1943, Deane & Damasceno 1961, Ziccardi et al 1996. Those primates were therefore considered to have mixed infections of T. minasense and T. rangeli.…”

“…For example, Trypanosoma (Herpetosoma) saimirii Rodhain, because it is poorly characterized, has seldom been identified by most of the authors during surveys of trypanosomes in squirrel monkeys. It is believed that T. saimirii resembles Trypanosoma (Megatrypanum) minasense Chagas in blood trypomastigotes, but the former infects triatomine bugs and develops profusely in Novy, McNeal and Nicolle (NNN) medium, while T. minasense does not (T. minasense may be cultured under special condictions, but not only in NNN, see Ziccardi et al 1996). When Rodhain (1941) described T. saimirii he seemed to be much more influenced by biological features than morphological ones in the distinction between this parasite and T. minasense.…”
