Determinação da maturidade sexual de Ucides cordatus (Crustacea, Brachyura, Ucididae) em duas áreas de manguezal do litoral sul de Pernambuco, Brasil

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Determination of sexual maturity of Ucides cordatus (Crustacea, Brachyura, Ucididae), in two mangrove areas of the south coast of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. This study aims to determine the size at morphological and physiological maturity of males and females at two populations of Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763) from Tamandaré, Pernambuco, Brazil. Crabs were sampled monthly from April 2008 to March 2009 at the Ariquindá and Mamucabas mangroves by professional crab catchers during ebb tide in t… Show more

“…Relative growth studies provide the opportunity to estimate the size at morphological maturity for brachyuran crustaceans, making it possible to better understand their adaptive strategies, such as the differential growth of chelipeds and abdomens between the sexes (Masunari and Swiech-Ayoub, 2003;Lima and Oshiro, 2006;Castiglioni and Coelho, 2011). Biometric evaluations can also be extremely valuable tools with which to detect possible anthropic impacts in the environment (Araújo et al, 2012).…”

“…In addition to the carapace, which suitable structures for defining anatomical landmarks, the chelipeds were selected for this study because they represent a secondary sexual character in several groups of crustaceans (Hartnoll, 1978 and1982;Flores et al, 2002;Castiglioni and Negreiros-Fransozo, 2004;Castiglioni and Coelho, 2011).…”

“…It is necessary to compare the values of the size at sexual maturity obtained with different methodologies to ensure the reliability of the estimates (Castiglioni & Coelho, 2011). Thus, the exact estimated size at maturity should include significant changes in the external morphology, in addition to the examination of gonadal development, as sizes obtained are often different (González-Gurriarán, 1985).…”
