“…Population surveys carried out in Brazilian cities over the past 20 years have shown a prevalence of over 30% of systemic arterial hypertension in the Brazilian population 21,22 , which is similar to the findings of this study: 32.3% for the 40 to 49 years age group and 36.1% for the 50 to 59 years age group. Findings regarding disease prevalence in individuals in the city of São Paulo relating to the period 2001 to 2002 published by Coutinho et al 23 were comparable to our study for the 40 to 49 years age group (36%) but higher in the case of the 50 to 59 years age group (53%).…”

“…The records of hypertensive patients were obtained from the patients' medical records and registration forms of the Hiperdia Program. The total number of hypertensive patients for the study was defined based on a prevalence of 25%, (3)(4)(5) an estimated population of 30,000 adults assisted by the FHS, a margin of error of 5%, and 95% confidence level. As this is a cluster sampling, the identified number was multiplied by the correction factor (deff) number 2, plus 20% for possible losses.…”

(4,5) The long-term effects of hypertension are in part associated to its characteristics of chronic disease, often asymptomatic and therefore often unknown or neglected by patients themselves.…”

“…With age progresses, differences in the resting blood pressure behavior (BP) are observed between genders, with women presenting higher prevalence of high blood pressure (HBP) from the fifth decade of life [3][4][5][6] . When considering that high BP levels represent an isolate and continuous risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, the adoption of strategies to primarily prevent HBP, especially for borderline individuals, has been recommended 7 .…”
