Background: The Quality of Life Scale (QLS) was developed to assess the quality of life of patients with schizophrenia, by Heinrichs, Hanlon and Carpenter, in 1984. Objectives: This systematic review analysed the scientific evidence produced from the QLS results and its relationship with the symptomatology of patients with schizophrenia. Methods: An electronic search was conducted on Pubmed/Medline and Scopus to identify relevant papers published within the last ten years (January 2007 to December 2016). The inclusion criteria were: studies whose samples included only outpatients with schizophrenia; studies whose aim was to compare the QLS results with the symptomatology of schizophrenia; studies written in English. The PRISMA criteria for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analyses were used. Results: Twelve studies were included in this systematic review. A total of 1645 patients with schizophrenia from four different countries were analysed. Ten articles used a cross-sectional study methodology and 2 articles involved a longitudinal study. Conclusions: Synthesis suggests that quality of life/functioning in patients with schizophrenia can be influenced by negative symptoms. Nevertheless, in relation to positive and depressive symptoms, the results are not congruent nor consistent. Therefore, this literature review indicated that more research is needed in order to obtain better evidence with regards to the influence of that symptomatology on the quality of life/functioning in patients with schizophrenia.

Objective: To analyze the quality of life of people with refractory schizophrenia using clozapine, and its associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study, conducted in the extended western region of Minas Gerais, which included patients with refractory schizophrenia using the antipsychotic, clozapine. For the measurement of quality of life, the Quality of Life Scale was used, specific for patients with schizophrenia. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Results: A total of 72 patients with a mean age of 42.9 years was part of the study. The overall score of the Quality of Life Scale indicated compromised quality of life, with a greater impairment in the social network domain (median = 2.36). The logistic regression analysis showed factors associated with a better quality of life. Conclusion: Low quality of life in patients with refractory schizophrenia was found. Physical activity, family income over three times the minimum wage, and having children were associated with a better quality of life. ResumoObjetivo: Analisar a qualidade de vida de pessoas com esquizofrenia refratária em uso de clozapina e seus fatores associados. Métodos: Estudo de delineamento transversal, realizado na Região Ampliada Oeste de Minas Gerais, que incluiu pacientes com esquizofrenia refratária em uso do antipsicótico clozapina. Para a mensuração da qualidade de vida, foi utilizada a escala Quality of Life Scale, específica para pacientes com esquizofrenia. Foram realizadas análise univariada e multivariada. Resultados: Participaram 72 pacientes, com média de idade de 42,9 anos. O escore global da Quality of Life Scale indicou qualidade de vida comprometida, com maior prejuízo no domínio rede social (mediana = 2,36). A análise de regressão logística apontou fatores associados a uma melhor qualidade de vida. Conclusão: Evidenciou-se uma baixa qualidade de vida dos pacientes com esquizofrenia refratária. Praticar atividade física, renda familiar acima de três salários mínimos e possuir filhos foram associados à melhor qualidade de vida.

Resumo: Objetivos: Conhecer os principais aspectos da experiência de cuidar de um familiar com esquizofrenia e discutir possíveis benefícios terapêuticos advindos da participação dos cuidadores em grupos de terapia ocupacional. Procedimentos metodológicos: Estudo qualitativo-descritivo, realizado em um ambulatório de saúde mental de um hospital geral localizado no interior do estado de São Paulo. A coleta de dados deu-se através de sessões de grupos de terapia ocupacional audiogravadas, das quais participaram dez familiares cuidadores de pacientes com esquizofrenia que fazem acompanhamento no ambulatório. Os dados foram analisados por meio da análise temática de conteúdo de Lawrence Bardin. Resultados: Os cuidadores de familiares com esquizofrenia encontram-se diariamente diante de dificuldades resultantes da convivência com o ente cuidado e dos comportamentos que ele apresenta. Os cuidadores ressaltaram a importância dos grupos como espaço em que foi possível entrar em contato com experiências de outras pessoas em situação similar, o que lhes possibilitou resolver dúvidas acerca da doença e dos cuidados oferecidos e também a oportunidade de refletirem sobre a importância de cuidarem de si mesmos. Conclusões: Há necessidade de novos estudos que tratem dessa temática e desenvolvam intervenções terapêuticas contínuas, oferecendo aos cuidadores escuta, compartilhamento de experiências e informações, visando instrumentalizá-los para que ofereçam um cuidado mais eficiente ao familiar com esquizofrenia e outros transtornos mentais. Ressalta-se a importância de avaliar essas intervenções. Palavras-chave: Grupos,Abstract: Objective: To know the main aspects featuring the experience of caring for a family member who is schizophrenic and discuss the possible therapeutic benefits which arise from the participation of caregivers in occupational therapy groups. Methodological procedures: Qualitative-descriptive study, performed in a mental health ambulatory at a general hospital in the state of São Paulo. Data was collected through audio-recording in occupational therapy groups which counted on the participation of 10 family-caregivers of schizophrenic patients with follow-up treatment at this ambulatory. The data were analyzed through the thematic content analysis of Lawrence Bardin. Results: Caregivers of schizophrenic patients face daily difficulties arising from living together with their beloved ones and coping with their behaviors. These caregivers stress the importance of groups as a possible opportunity to have contact with other experiences of people under similar conditions, which not only enables them to clear doubts concerning the illness and the provided care, but also to reflect on the importance of taking care of themselves.
