Show more

“…Disturbance in the absorption of nutrients leads to adjustments in distribution of assimilates, in the ratio of shoot to root growth, inducing, eventually, premature flowering and leaf abscission (Larcher, 1995). Although in the present study the roots of E. polystachya were not measured, Lopes & Piedade (2009) did not find changes in the Fig. 4 Effect of crude oil concentration on E. crassipes root length.…”

“…Aquatic macrophytes are also affected by chemical pollution through the absorption of organochlorides, hydrocarbons and heavy metals (Lopes & Piedade, 2009; Lopes & Piedade, 2011; Crema, Biudes & Camargo, 2012). Urucu crude oil (the Urucu field in the central Amazon produces approximately 40,000 barrels of oil daily; PETROBRAS, 2016) applied to the soil causes high rates of mortality in E. polystachya , decreases the regrowth rate and, in low doses, may cause a reduction in leaf number and total biomass (Lopes & Piedade, 2009; Lopes & Piedade, 2011). The sensitivity to oil contamination is not the same for all macrophytes; thus, an oil spill may cause complete mortality of one species but not another, altering macrophyte species diversity (Crema, Biudes & Camargo, 2012).…”
