Aquatic herbaceous macrophytes grow in profusion in the Amazon fertile varzea floodplains. A large number of species occur but only a few are particularly abundant, supporting food chains, contributing substantially to carbon and nutrient cycles. Their growth and role in the ecosystem depend, among other, on its life cycles and habits, floating or semi-aquatic. Although in the last decades, petroliferous activity intensified in the Central Amazon region and so did oil spills, the effect of petroleum on the native aquatic plants is unknown. The present study was designed to test experimentally the survival and morpho-anatomical modifications of the free floating water hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes and the semi-aquatic grass Echinochloa polystachya to 10 different concentrations of crude oil. Higher concentrations of crude oil caused the mortality in both species; however, lethal dose (LD 50 ) values showed that E. polystachya was more sensitive than E. crassipes. Despite the higher tolerance of E. crassipes, the inhibition of root and leaf growth as well as anatomical modifications in leaves were registered in higher concentrations. Additionally, the oil caused a reduction in leaf numbers in both species. Although mortality of the floating species was lower, it may increases over time, since important alterations in morphology and anatomy occurred. These results show that oil spills in the Amazon varzea can cause severe alterations in the aquatic flora and in the floodplain dynamics.
RESUMOVictoria amazonica (Poepp.) J.C. Morphology of flower, fruit and seedling of Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) J.C. Sowerby (Nymphaeaceae)ABSTRACT Victoria amazonica (Poepp.) J.C. Sowerby is a hydrophyte that occurs in the white water leas and igapos of the Amazonian and Paraguay Basin. The flower, fruit and seedling/"tirodendro" morphology is the object of the present work. The botanical material was collected at Parintins and Manaus, Amazonian state, Brazil. The morphological analysis was made in both fresh and fixed material. The seedling development was accomplished in flasks with water containing little oxygen and maintained in the darkness. Flowers present long pedicel and they are hemicyclic, dichlamydeous, bisexual with vespertine anthesis. Fruits are fleshy, indehiscent with pseudo-syncarpy. Seeds present aril that acts in the water dispersion. Seedlings grow in hypoxy conditions and they present an acicular and exposed cotyledon. The "tirodendro" stage presents eophylls with heterophylly. Flowers present basic morphologic characters of the family, the definition of the fruit type demands ontogenetic study and the heterophylly is a typical character of Nymphaeaceae seedlings/ "tirodendros".
Abstract Morphological characterization of seedlings of five tree species from the tropical semideciduous forest, Brazil. The tree species Astronium graveolens (Anacardiaceae), Cedrela fissilis (Meliaceae), Gallesia integrifolia (Phytolaccaceae), Parapiptadenia rigida (Fabaceae) and Tabebuia avellanedae (Bignoniaceae) are found in remnants of tropical semideciduous forest in the North and Northwest of Paraná State and interior of the State of São Paulo. This study describes the morphological characteristics of seedlings in order to enable their identification in the field. Seedlings analyzed proved to be morphologically distinct from their cotyledons to eophylls and metaphylls and they may easily be distinguished in the plant community. All species showed leaves with petioles, and only C. fissilis and T. avellanedae presented eophylls. Cedrela fissilis has compounded eophyll, trifoliate, with integral edge, while in T. avellanedae it is simple, with serrated edge. Seedlings of G. integrifolia presented simple mesophyll, while the metaphyslls of C. fissilis, T. avellanedae and A. graveolens metaphylls are compounded ; in P. rigida the metaphyll is bipinate. Since seedlings were visually distinct, the field's identification is possible.
