Seroprevalence of hepatitis B virus infection and seroconvertion to anti-HBsAg in laboratory staff in Goiânia, Goiás

Abstract: Were analyzed 648 serum samples from laboratory staff in Goiânia, Goiás aiming detection of three serological markers of HBV: HBsAg, anti-HBsAg and anti-HBcAg. The HBsAg and anti-HBcAg positive samples were also analyzed for HBeAg, anti-HBeAg and anti-HBcAgIgM markers. HBV infection rate of 24.1% was observed and, from them, 0.7% were positive for HBsAg. Viral DNA was detected by PCR in two HBsAg positive samples. A vaccination index of 74.5% and a global index of 89.9% of serological response to vaccination w… Show more

“…Furthermore, the frequency of vaccine response was significantly lower among older subjects, in accordance with other authors (Ferraz et al 1992, Cleveland et al 1994, Cuevas et al 1997, Averhoff et al 1998, Arca et al 1998, Silva et al 2005. Consistent with previous investigations (Zumaeta et al 1995, Prakash et al 2000, differences in vaccine response were not observed regarding gender, smoking status, vaccination schedule, vaccine administration route, and vaccine site, although females and nonsmokers are more likely to demonstrate high vaccine response (Cleveland et al 1994, Averhoff et al 1998.…”

“…Nevertheless, the percentage of adhesion of these professionals to HBV immunization is considered higher than those observed in other studies (Cleveland 1996, Camilo 1998, Ammon et al 2000 as among health-care workers (HCWs) (Silva et al 2003(Silva et al , 2005. In Brazil studies have shown vaccination indices similar to those observed in the present study (Rodrigues 2002, Martins & Barreto 2003.…”

“…Considering an expected HBV infection rate for HCWs in region of 23.5% (1,20) it was estimated that 673 dentists would be representative, with 3% margin of error, 95% of confidence level and a 10% safety margin.…”

“…Several studies related to HBV have been carried out in Goiânia, Goiás in the general population and in risk groups, and it was observed that the rate of seroprevalence varies from 6.1% -urban female population (8) to 63.4% -dialysis center patients (4). In addition, studies from different groups of HCWs, found a seroprevalence of 23.4% in hospital workers (1), 23.1% in workers at hemodialysis centers (15) and 24.1% in laboratory workers (20). However, there are no studies regarding the hepatitis B infection in dentists.…”

“…Working in general services represented a signifi cant risk of acquiring HBV infection in Goiânia. 17 In Egypt, similarly, there were differences in vaccination rates, with a disadvantage for the HWs in the cleaning sector (who are included in the general services classifi cation): 38% of the professionals who provided direct care to users had been vaccinated, versus only 3.5% of The schooling level, which is generally lower among HWs of the cleaning sector or general services, 13 may be associated with a lower rate of vaccination. Having been vaccinated against hepatitis B was associated with schooling level, and those with lower educational level were less protected.…”
