Preterm Birth and Fetal Growth Restriction in Hiv-Infected Brazilian Pregnant Women

Abstract: Introduction:Maternal HIV infection and related co-morbidities may have two outstanding consequences to fetal health: mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) and adverse perinatal outcomes. After Brazilian success in reducing MTCT, the attention must now be diverted to the potentially increased risk for preterm birth (PTB) and intrauterine fetal growth restriction (IUGR).Objective:To determine the prevalence of PTB and IUGR in low income, antiretroviral users, publicly assisted, HIV-infected women and to verify it… Show more

“…First, vertical transmission may lead to subsequent HIV related damage to the central nervous system [ 24 , 25 ]. Second, compromise to prenatal environment may lead to higher incidences of low-birth weight and prematurity factors [ 26 , 27 ] which have been associated with poor developmental outcomes. Third, compromise of the postnatal home environment may act by limiting stimulation through suboptimal parenting behavior [ 28 ].…”

“…The rate of LBW from our findings (<20%) differ considerably from data reported in Cote d’Ivoire and in India [ 8 , 11 , 12 ], possibly due to higher immunological status among women in our study. In the frame of findings from in Botswana and other African or Latin America settings, immune-compromised pregnant women receiving PMTCT option B+ should thus far be monitored during routine ANC to limit the potentials of foetal growth retardation in RLS [ 14 , 19 , 20 ], in order to achieve similar target performance in the western world [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…The DDE etiology is unclear, however, nutritional deficiencies, infections in early childhood, prematurity, low birth weight and the use of antibiotics such as penicillin and cephalosporin, have been associated with condition . In children infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), pre‐, peri‐ and postnatal changes are often described …”
