Intestinal parasites and commensals among individuals from a landless camping in the rural area of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: We evaluated the occurrence of intestinal parasites and commensals among children and adults from a landless camping in the rural area of Uberlândia, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, from October to November 2001. Stool samples from 78 individuals were examined by both the Baermann-Moraes and Lutz methods. Fifty-one (65.4%; CI 54.8 - 76.0) individuals were found to be infected, 23 (45.1%) children and 28 (54.9%) adults, of whom 34 (66.7%) were mono-infected, 9 (17.6%) bi-infected, and 8 (15.7%) poly-infected. “…5,6,13,14 This is suggestive of parasitic infection being gender independent as other studies in Nepal and elsewhere have also reported flickering (inconsistent) gender based prevalence. 5,6,8,10,12,[15][16][17] Elderly people (more than 60 years) in the study have been found to suffer higher infection rate as compared to the children and adult. About one-quarter of elderly patients have parasitic infection which is quite lower than that reported earlier by Shakya et al (2006).…”

“…Neste trabalho pode-se notar uma elevada ocorrência de Endolimax nana e Entamoeba coli. Embora estes organismos não sejam considerados patógenos, estes dados são alarmantes principalmente porque se trata de grupos de alto risco de transmissão, devido as atividades de manipulação de alimentos que realizam 15 .…”

“…Additionally, no SSI exists for EP and, as shown before [9], nasality can negatively impact accuracy for this language. Given the particular relevance of nasality for EP [10,11], we have conducted an experiment that aims at improving on the current state-of-the-art in this area by determining the possibility of detecting nasal vowels in surface EMG-based speech interfaces, and consequently improving this type of interaction system. It is important to note that, as explained later, in more detail, the literature does not provide enough information regarding the possibility of detecting the nasality phenomenon, with surface EMG, and which sensor positions might be more adequate, to that purpose.…”
