Total IgE detection in paired cerebrospinal fluid and serum samples from patients with neurocysticercosis

Abstract: Neurocysticercosis (NC), the presence of Taenia solium metacestodes in tissues, is the most frequent and severe parasitic infection of the central nervous system. We investigated the presence of total IgE by an automated chemiluminescence assay in 53 paired cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum samples from patients with NC (P) and in 40 CSF samples from individuals with other neurological disorders as the control group (C). Total IgE concentration ranged from 1.2 to 6.6 IU/ml (mean = 1.4 IU/ml, standard deviati… Show more

“…Recent research has focused on the role of T helper (Th) subsets and the cytokines they release in response to helminths, especially of Th2 cells (Sher and Coffman 1992). Eosinophilia and elevated IgE are hallmarks of helminth infections (Okano et al 1999;Bueno et al 2000aBueno et al , 2000b. Th2 cytokines induce most notably the production of IgE (IL-4 and IL-13) (Pene et al 1988;Banchereau and Rousset 1991;Punnonen et al 1993) and eosinophilia (IL-5) (Clutterbuck et al 1989;Sanderson 1990) and they are in turn regulated by a network of cross-regulatory cytokines supplied by Th subsets (Kimata et al 1992;King et al 1995) like IL-10 that modulates IFN-c and IL-5 production (Boros and Whitfield 1998).…”
