Objective: Constipation is a frequent motility disorder and while a common complaint among the overall population, is particularly prevalent among the elderly. The increase of this population group is creating a growing demand for long term care institutions. The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of and factors associated with constipation in elderly residents of long stay care institutions. Method: The study involved 87 individuals. The data collected from each participant included gender, daily intake of water and fiber, physical activity, family history of constipation and nutritional status. The diagnosis of constipation was based on Roma III criteria. Statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS software program (version 18.0) with a level of significance of 5% ( p≤0.05). The Student t, Mann-Whitney, Pearson's chi-square or Fischer's exact tests were employed. Results: The sample was predominantly female (80.5%), with a mean age of 79.4(±9.6) years. A 42.52% prevalence of constipation was observed. Among affected individuals, the condition was more frequent among women (89.2%), those aged over 80 years (67.6%), those who did not engage in physical activity (56.8%), those with below the recommended intake of water and fiber, those who had a family history of constipation, and those who were diagnosed with eutrophia (56.3%). Among the factors analyzed, only age ( p=0.049) and low fiber intake ( p=0.019) were significantly linked to constipation. Conclusion: The results show that constipation is a multifactorial disease that is significantly related to age and low fiber intake.

Objective: To provide anthropometric data of elderly people living in the urban area of Joinville, SC. Methodology: Two hundred and eighteen elderly people, aged 60 years or more, of both sexes, not institutionalized and residents in the urban area of Joinville city-SC were analyzed, in the year of 2002. The elderly were gathered according to sex and age group (60-69 years, 70-79 years and 80 and more). The anthropometric variables are presented under the average form, deviation-pattern and percentile (P5, P10, P25, P50, P75, P90 and P95). Results: From 218 elderly, 130 (59.6%) were women and 88 (40.4%) men. Although the mean values of most investigated variables were proposing a tendency to reduce with the age increase, there was no statistically significant difference in the mean values among the age groups for both sex (p>0.05). When compared by sex, the body mass index, hip circumference and skinfolds mean values of women were significantly higher from the men. These, however, presented the waist circumference mean value significantly higher from the women (p <0.05). Conclusion: Most of the studies accomplished with elderly people in other countries have been investigated this category considering people with 65 years old or more, what makes difficult the comparison with the Brazilian data. In addition to other studies with elderly people in Brazil, the data obtained in this study can contribute for the construction of an anthropometric pattern of the Brazilian elderly population, inexistent in the country so far.

ObjetivoIdentificar o estado nutricional, segundo o índice de massa corporal, e fornecer informações sobre medidas antropométricas de idosos institucionalizados no município de Florianópolis (SC). MétodosEstudo transversal, no qual a população em estudo foi composta por 232 idosos, com idade a partir de 60 anos, residentes em instituições geriátricas do município de Florianópolis (SC). A avaliação antropométrica foi realizada obtendo-se o valor do índice de massa corporal, da prega cutânea triciptal e da circunferência da panturrilha. O diagnóstico do estado nutricional foi realizado utilizando-se os pontos de corte preconizados pela Organização Pan-Americana de Saúde para índice de massa corporal. Os dados são apresentados sob a forma de média e desvio-padrão. Foi realizado o teste t de Student para verificar a diferença entre os valores médios das variáveis entre os sexos. ResultadosA amostra constituiu-se de 167 idosos de ambos os sexos. Encontrou-se uma prevalência de 45,5% de baixo peso, 33,5% de peso normal, 7,8% de pré-obesidade e 13,2% de obesidade. Para todas as variáveis antropométricas, o valor médio das mulheres foi superior ao dos homens. ConclusãoOs resultados encontrados indicaram a prevalência de 66,5% da amostra com estado nutricional inadequado, evidenciando a necessidade de medidas de promoção ou reabilitação da saúde dos idosos.
