OBJECTIVE:To assess reliability of information about nutritional facts stated on labels of industrialized foods. METHODS:A total of 153 industrialized foods, usually consumed by children and adolescents and marketed in the city of São Paulo, Southeastern Brazil, between 2001 and 2005, were analyzed. Nutrient contents stated on labels were compared to the results obtained from offi cial (physical-chemical) analytical methods, considering the 20% variability tolerated by the current legislation to approve or reject samples. Means, standard deviations, 95% confi dence intervals for the nutrients analyzed, and the distribution of percentage frequency of samples rejected were calculated. RESULTS:All salty products analyzed showed non-compliance of dietary fi ber, sodium and saturated fat content. Sweet products showed variation between zero and 36% of rejection due to their dietary fi ber content. More than half (52%) of cookies were rejected due to their saturated fat content. Nutrients associated with obesity and its health problems were those showing the highest proportions of non-compliance. Lack of reliability of label information in the samples analyzed violates the regulations of the Resolution of the Collegiate Board of Directors RDC 360/03 and the rights guaranteed by the Nutritional and Food Safety Law and Consumer Protection Code. CONCLUSIONS:High indices of non-compliance of nutritional data were found on labels of foods aimed at children and adolescents, indicating the urgent need for surveillance practices and other nutritional labeling measures.

ObjectiveIn the light of the Workers' Food Program (WFP) growth and its recent review of nutritional parameters regulations, the study aimed at evaluating food intake in WFP through dietary assessment of lunch served in the program and workers' nutritional status. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out in a representative sample of workers in Brasília, Federal District, Brazil. A total of 1,044 subjects who had lunch at 52 food and nutrition units were evaluated. Social-economic and demographic data were collected as well as anthropometric measures for calculating the Body Mass Index. Food intake was assessed by dish weight and direct observation of dish composition. ResultsOf all subjects, 43% had excess weight, 33.7% were overweight and 9.3% were obese. Males were most affected. Median lunch energy intake was 515 kcal in women and 736 kcal in men. Median dietary fiber intake was 6.0 g among women and 8.3 g among men, and median cholesterol intake was over 90 mg among subjects with excess weight. ConclusionsThe results indicate that the study population who is often seen as healthy is at nutritional risk. Workers in WFP should be targeted for health promotion strategies using especially nutritionists' skills as educators.

ResumoObjetivou-se analisar a quantidade e a qualidade de produtos alimentícios veiculados por três redes principais de canal aberto da televisão brasileira em três períodos do dia. Os produtos alimentícios, quando comparados a outros produtos, foram os mais freqüentemente veiculados, independentemente do horário ou do dia de gravação. A análise da qualidade dos alimentos veiculados mostra que a televisão promove, predominantemente, produtos com altos teores de gordura e/ou açúcar e sal. Concluise que a predominância de produtos com altos teores de gorduras e/ou açúcar pode estar contribuindo para uma mudança nos hábitos alimentares de crianças e jovens e agravando o problema da obesidade na população. AbstractThe main objective of the study was to analyze the amount and quality of food advertisement on Brazilian television in three different times of the day. The results showed that food products, when compared to other products, were the most frequently advertised, regardless of the time of the day in a given week analyzed. Television promotes food predominantly high in fat and/or sugar and salt. The large number of high fat and/or sugar and salt products advertised can contribute to changing food habits of children and teenagers, and increasing the incidence of obesity in the population. INTRODUÇÃOA televisão (TV) é o veículo de comunicação utilizado para o entretenimento e para a educação e representa a maior fonte de informação sobre o mundo, sendo capaz de transmitir aos mais diversos lugares e culturas dados sobre como as pessoas se comportam, o que vestem, o que pensam, como aparentam ser e o que comem.Nota-se significativo aumento do tempo gasto com o hábito de assistir à TV. No Brasil, adolescentes passam cerca de cinco horas por dia diante da TV. 5 Sabe-se que uma exposição de apenas 30 segundos a comerciais de alimentos é capaz de influenciar a escolha de crianças a determinado produto, 1 o que mostra que o papel da TV, no estabelecimento de hábitos alimentares, deve ser investigado. Diante da TV, uma criança pode aprender concepções incorretas sobre o que é um alimento saudável, uma vez que a maioria dos alimentos veiculados possui elevados teores de gorduras, óleos, açúcares e sal.Maus hábitos alimentares estão associados a diversos prejuízos à saúde, entre eles, a obesidade, cujos índices têm crescido nas últimas décadas como resultado de aumento no consumo de alimentos com alta densidade calórica e redução na atividade física.
