Show more

“…Our results show that the susceptibility of the Ouh strain to OXA and PZQ has changed when compared to results obtained for Brazilian strains by other Brazilian authors (Katz et al 1973, Dias et al 1978, Araújo et al 1996. Gomes et al (1993) showed that efficacy of OXA and PZQ on the F 1 generation of the parasite was 69.7% and 87.5%, respectively.…”

“…About 10 million Brazilian S. mansoni carriers have been treated with this drug (Almeida Machado 1982). It has been reported human strains of S. mansoni that have altered their susceptibility (resistance and/or tolerance) to OXA (Katz et al 1973, Dias et al 1978. The tolerance to PZQ has been reported in Senegal (Stelma et al 1995) and in Egypt (Ismail et al 1996), and even in Brazil, where it is rarely used (Gomes et al 1993, Araújo et al 1996.…”

“…Our molecular data are backed up by clinical observations from the early use of OXA. Resistant parasites were detected in Brazil in the 1970s [21,22], before any mass drug administration [14]. Similar observations of S .…”

“…The present results obtained for animals inoculated with S. mansoni isolates from patients with failure to oxamniquine did not confirm the probable resistance observed by Katz et al (1973) using a human strain of the parasite resistant to oxamniquine and to other schistosomicidal agents. Araújo et al (1980), Dias et al (1978Dias et al ( , 1982, Meang et al (1987), , emphasized similar results with Brazilian isolates from Minas Gerais. Kinoti (1987) reported variations in the suscetibility of S. mansoni to oxamniquine within certain areas of Brazil and Kenya.…”
